5.0 out of 5 stars A great music collection by a wonderful group
This 2-CD set may seem to be an ambitious project at first glance, considering the group had just one major hit but the music here is a very nice tribute to a group that was always undervalued by R&B fans and the chart-conscious record-buying public. 1.0 out of 5 stars Question
I was looking for a group called "Shep & The Limelights" who sang "Daddy's Home To Stay", but the album description seems to have come up as Tommy James & the Shondells.

1. Is this an error? or 2. Are Shep & The Limelights really Tommy James & The Limelights?

This 2-CD set may seem to be an ambitious project at first glance, considering the group had just one major hit but the music here is a very nice tribute to a group that was always undervalued by R&B fans and the chart-conscious record-buying public. The collection kicks off with the classic "Daddy's Home" and is followed by several very nice songs that were mainstays at parties and dances in the early '60s. Many of these songs were chart-worthy but never achieved the airplay and popularity they deserved. Shep and the Limelites had their own unique sound and excellent harmonies to support the lead singer's plaintive vocals. The group also featured an excellent vibraphone accompaniment and a saxaphone for their music which always had a soft, velvety quality. The group was in their element with slow, soulful harmonies and seemed to avoid up-tempo, hard-edged music and rhythms that were favored by the dance crowd. Disc 1 is the best of the two CDs but Disc 2 can also stand on its own. Many of the songs capture the give and take commentary of the recording studio, with multiple takes and commentary by the group with recording personnel. There isn't one bad track in this collection and perhaps one day Shep and the Limelites will be appreciated as one of the best R&B groups that were the essence of silky-smooth soul.
