About the Author

F. Lewis Stark (aka Big Daddy) brings his unique view of fatherhood, and the world at large, to life in his first book. His tales (and cartoons) from the lighter side of raising a child with autism always spark laughter and discussion. By telling funny and off-beat stories from his life, Big Daddy shows that raising a kid with special needs is not all doom and gloom. To the contrary, it can be quite humorous and inspirational. Big Daddy spends his days enjoying his kids, doing crossword puzzles, yelling at the TV, and thinking about what to eat for lunch. He has several very nice tattoos which his mother pretends don’t exist. Big Daddy is able to survive each day with the help of his long suffering and beautiful wife.

I'm a long-time fan of Big Daddy's blog, and his book contains never-before-seen essays, anecdotes, and cartoons about life with his autistic son. As the parent of a special needs child, I so appreciate looking past the gloom and doom and finding humor and joy in our day-to-day lives. Who needs a laugh more than us? You will find plenty in this book!

This book is awesome. I have a child with autism and I know that there's nothing more important than being able to find the humor in things. Big Daddy not only does that, but he does it WELL!! You don't have to have a child with autism to love this book; you will laugh no matter what.

I've followed Big Daddy's blog for several months, so I was thrilled when his book came out.

Big Daddy has taught me a different way to parent a special needs child. He truly has shown me that it is OK to relax a little and just roll with things sometimes. The stories in his book are insightful, inspirational, and funny, and his cartoons are downright hilarious. Don't merely gloss over them, the humor is often in the fine details. My own autistic son loves Big Daddy's cartoons!

The essays by the Friends of Big Daddy add an extra dimension to the book by providing different voices and viewpoints, all of which reinforce his philosophy of love and acceptance.

If your child or someone else you love is affected by autism, do yourself a favor and read this book.

This book was full of great stories about raising children with Autism. The composition left something to be desired. Once I realized it was mostly a compilation of blog posts it didn't bother me as much. The author would explain things over again that didn't necessarily need to be repeated.

That being said it was still a fun quick read. Made me laugh and I was so glad I read it.

I picked up the tan book. Dr. J walked over. "Are there funny things in that book?"

"Yes," I answered, surprised that he knew that.

"Is that Griffin's book?" he further questioned.

"Yes, it's Griffin's book." Someone had been paying attention.

Every so often when the boys were playing nicely together, I'd pick up the tan book and read it. Almost every time I picked it up, I laughed. And laughed. Sometimes I laughed so much I almost cried. If our own Daddy were sitting at the computer working on stuff, I'd say, "Listen to this..." and read an excerpt from the book. Then Daddy would laugh. Dr. J had been listening to me laugh and hearing me say Griffin's name when I read the excerpts.

You see, Big Daddy, a guest during Autism Awareness Month, has published a book. He calls it Big Daddy's Tales from the Lighter Side of Raising a Kid with Autism. Just like his blog, his book approaches autism with humor. Don't worry. You still see the seriousness of autism--obsessions, health issues, sensory challenges, lack of social skills, developmental delays, etc. It's just that you see it from a lighthearted perspective.

Big Daddy sprinkled some of his famous cartoons throughout the book. My favorite one is the dodge ball game. Dr. J's favorites are about sleep (or should I say lack thereof) and elevators. My all-time favorite story is the one about Wilford Brimley. And believe me, there are a lot of funny stories in this book! In addition to being funny, the stories are short, so you can read one between meltdowns, even!

Why do I like Big Daddy's Tales so much? Because I can relate to it. His son Griffin is eight years older than Dr. J. However, I can see Dr. J doing some very similar things.
