Book Description

April 21, 2011
What do elevators, beloved character actor Wilford Brimley, mall maps, flashing yellow traffic lights, the Weather Channel, and Allstate commercials have in common? Not much other than they all are on Griffin's list of favorite hobbies and interests. Over the years, Griffin has embraced these simple pleasures with the same passion some kids reserve for their favorite professional sports teams. Upon hearing Griffin’s diagnosis of autism over a decade ago, his parents felt as though their world ended. They often wished there was a resource available to show, in a lighthearted and humorous way, that having a child with a disability was not all gloom and doom but rather could be a lot of fun. First with his hilarious blog and now with this book, Griffin's dad has tried to fill this void, and launch a crusade, of sorts, to make the public aware that life doesn’t end with a diagnosis of a cognitive disability.

About the Author

F. Lewis Stark (aka Big Daddy) brings his unique view of fatherhood, and the world at large, to life in his first book. His tales (and cartoons) from the lighter side of raising a child with autism always spark laughter and discussion. By telling funny and off-beat stories from his life, Big Daddy shows that raising a kid with special needs is not all doom and gloom. To the contrary, it can be quite humorous and inspirational. Big Daddy spends his days enjoying his kids, doing crossword puzzles, yelling at the TV, and thinking about what to eat for lunch. He has several very nice tattoos which his mother pretends don’t exist. Big Daddy is able to survive each day with the help of his long suffering and beautiful wife.

I'm a long-time fan of Big Daddy's blog, and his book contains never-before-seen essays, anecdotes, and cartoons about life with his autistic son. As the parent of a special needs child, I so appreciate looking past the gloom and doom and finding humor and joy in our day-to-day lives. Who needs a laugh more than us? You will find plenty in this book!

This book is awesome. I have a child with autism and I know that there's nothing more important than being able to find the humor in things. Big Daddy not only does that, but he does it WELL!! You don't have to have a child with autism to love this book; you will laugh no matter what.

Big Daddy's Tales from the Lighter Side of Raising a Kid with Autism is hilarious. Not only that, his anecdotes from raising one of the quirkiest kids ever, help to provide an emotional roadmap for other parents who have children with physical or mental impairments. I would recommend this book for anyone whose life is affected by someone with autism.
