5.0 out of 5 stars Daddy's Ties
What a spectacular book! I can't say enough about it, I've been recycling old clothes myself, and am so delighted to see all the things Shirley has done with ties. I've started collecting them myself inspired by her visit on simply quilts on hgtv. I am in awe of her. While I'm not a true quilter, I do sew and really enjoyed reading all of her ideas.

3.0 out of 5 stars Speaking from 80 years of quilting...
I found there was not enough information about the pattern. I wanted to make a necktie quilt for my grandson from his late father's ties, displaying the whole tie, not cutting the material up. I found a picture of an example of a completed quilt like I wanted to make (A Lifetime of Ties), but no information such as the length to cut the ties. I figured it out, but it...

This is probably a great book for an experienced quilter, which I am not. I sew well, and wanted to make something from my deceased father's ties. Book was good inspiration, but most of the patterns were too complicated for me. I also found the multiple abbrevations too complicated to keep track of without going back and forth all the time. Again, though good inspiration, and I did find one fairly uncomplicated and useful pattern.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shirley Botsford's Daddy's ties: A project &keepsake Book, March 6, 2006
This review is from: Daddy's Ties (Paperback)
I love this book. It is so informative and really gets your creative juices flowing. The projects are very easy to understand and fast to complete. I would have given it a 5 but I hated the abrevations she used, because I had to copy the page so I wouldn't have to keep refering back to the page where she listed them. Yes, they are used in other crafts(crochet and knitting) which I use but not in sewing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and creative ideas, March 31, 1999

A lot of interesting ideas for using wonderful pieces of colorful silk. Make an heirloom with ties from a family member or collect them from friends. I've been getting ties from all over to use in projects I've found in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Projects for Ties, September 22, 2007
This review is from: Daddy's Ties (Paperback)
This is a well written craft book that gives plenty of ideas for using ties in crafts. My father recently passed away and he had many ties. Using this book I can make something for myself, my sister and brother using his ties as a remembrance.

I really liked the book. Not only did it give me good ideas, it also included patterns that I could use. All of the instructions are easy to understand. I am not a crafty person but wanted to make something for my kids from their dad's ties for christmas. This book has so many good idea's that I am having a hard time trying to figure out what one to do. I may just have to keep doing projects until I run out of ties.

I am probably like most of the people who are searching for a book like this, I want to make something useful, beautiful, practical, etc. from the numerous ties that the men in my life are no longer using (for various reasons- changing tastes, or fashion, just plain worn-out, or becuase they have passed away.) I found this book to be wanting in the areas of my greatest interest. It seemed like too much emphasis was placed on acquiring ties, like how to word a classified ad, and where to look at thrift shops. I wanted some more guidance in the actual assembly of the projects, and this book just didn't provide that.
I also have to admit I was a bit put off by the photo of the author displaying her 'creations' she gave the me impression of a gypsy. The items she made are not attractive, and not at all what I was looking for. I wanted a book that would show me how to assemble the ties into a pretty wall hanging, pillow or quilt, not a funky hat or vest and skirt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!, November 9, 2010
This review is from: Daddy's Ties (Paperback)
I LOVE this book! I knew after 40 years of giving my dad ties for Christmas (our annual joke!), that I would have to eventually be able to make something out of them. When he passed away this year I knew it was time. I have had this book for a couple of years, and have been collecting a few "stray" ties along the way.
I enjoyed the humor of the authors "tie hunts", and the helpful idea of how to place an ad to aid in the aquisition of ties.
Many have complained about her use of abbreviations, but on page 18, she clearly explains this, and even provides us a bookmark we can copy and cut out for reference, so we don't have to flip back and forth..(a simple step which some people didn't bother with, and then complain that the author is lazy for using abbreviations!).
I love the dress that she made "Daddy's Ties", but as I am not into making my own clothes will probably not make this item. If I did have one complaint, it would be that it was not long enough! I would have liked to have seen a few more smaller projects that would be easier for hand sewing. I don't have a machine, so all my sewing is by hand. Also I wish the patterens had been a little darker, and I would have put them in the back of the book so that they could have been easier for my eyes to see....but this is a MINOR complaint.
Just today I am finally starting my first project, "Souvenir Tie Ball" and am going to make small ones and give one to my sister as a Christmas Tree Ornament. That way daddy will still be with us at Christmas time!
READ the book (and ALL tips, advice and instructions) and you will find it an inspirational joy!
THANK YOU Miss Shirley for this wonderful book and I hope you put together a new one soon! (About ties, of course)
