5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent turn-based RPG March 14, 2014
Platform for Display:PC Download|Edition:Standard
The easiest way to describe Blackguards is "XCOM: Enemy Unknown" without the base management and in a fantasy vs sci-fi setting. I'll list the pros and cons as that is what I usually focus on when reviewing a game:

Pros:
* Outstanding visuals, beautiful game 3D rendered.
* Interesting system of character development. You are given "Adventure Points" to spend in probably a hundred different categories.
* Wide variety of spell, weapons, skills, etc.. to choose from.
* Every combat scenario is custom crafted and linked to the story in some way (no randomly generated dungeons just for the sake of leveling up).
* Awesome voice acting and character development. I still chuckle every time the dwarf yells "Stop it. I don't need that" when you heal him in combat.
* Interesting story and characters. Unlike most games, the characters grow on you and you actually care about what happens to them.
* Good pacing and good length for this type of game. Not too short or too drawn out.

Cons:
* You can scroll and tilt the camera but not rotate or zoom it. Not a big deal, but would be nice for certain scenes.
* Would be nice on criticals for a finishing move similar to XCOM.
* Astral points do not regenerate between combats. You have to camp or stay at an inn. Doesn't make sense since they regenerate in combat every round.

The pros definitely outweigh the cons in my opinion. I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys turn-based combat games of any variety.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and lengthy RPG/RNG April 19, 2015
By Peter

Alright....Blackguards is definitely a game with no lack for content. In fact, there was enough for me to put in a solid 60 hours. Some of that time was redoing battles and such, but there were plenty of quests and plenty to do in general.

The game itself is a curious blend of your prototypical Daedalic adventure/point and click game (when you are in towns, albeit with the hidden object stuff removed of course) mixed with turn based hex battles that use random number generators ala XCOM and other luminous titles. The RNG aspect can make things interesting as occasionally, you will inexplicably miss when you show a 95% chance to hit (actually, it isn't inexplicable..you fell victim to that other 5% lol), but at other times, when your percentage is really low and you go for a desperation power move, and it connects, you totally feel excited and stoked for having taken that risk.

Graphically, it wont blow you away. It is reminiscent of other Daedalic games when in cities/towns/etc..., but when in battle, it's more of an isometric approach with movable cameras that can be adjusted to the cardinal directions as well as going from top down to more straight ahead angles. This definitely comes into play during battles as you get different vantage points to make decisions and set actions. Definitely pulls off that middle ages with mysticism look well. The cutscenes are more of the same. Nothing too spectacular, but still effective and definitely in line with the overall game presentation.

The story itself is interesting enough. You are framed for the murder of the princess, whom you and a few of your friends grew up with while under the care and apprenticeship of a powerful wizard.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you enjoy games like King's Bounty June 30, 2014
By Saboth

If you enjoy games like King's Bounty, X-Com, Heroes of Might and Magic, you'll probably enjoy this. It resembles X-Com more than anything else. I only have 2 gripes: the rule system can be hard to understand, and as a result, the armor, weapons, stats are hard to understand. When you look at an item, it does not leap out at you that it is better than another item. In most any other game, you understand that "X" amount of armor or damage is better than "Y". 6 is greater than 5, so you know this is better, but it's not so cut and dry in this game, at least unless you understand the rule set. I don't believe when you play a video game version of a tabletop you should have to understand all of the core mechanics though. I just want to play the game, not memorize monster manuals and THACO and rule sets for rolls. It is completely possible to build a character that will fail at end game if you don't spec correctly (the benefit of this though is you can build some really crazy characters if you want). If they could have done a better job with that, it would be a perfect game.

However, if you enjoy turn based strategy games, this one is top notch. Every map is unique, with different goals, layouts, obstacles, etc. Some of them are almost puzzle-like, and may take several attempts to figure out. Lots and lots of battles.

RPG is not new genre. It is why i am always very skeptical about new releases. This RPG is perfect in everything: Engine, graphics, sound, story, battles, items, talks, colors, gameplay, everything.
