5.0 out of 5 stars excellent plasma for the $
My Daewoo DTS-42 plasma was manufactured by NEC, a respectable plasma manufacturer, then rebadged as Daewoo. You can shine a flashlight in the back of the unit and see that it says NEC all over the place. I also verified this on AVSforum.com. I picked this up the day after Thanksgiving at CompUSA for less than $1500 (stand and speakers included), an absolute bargain at...

1.0 out of 5 stars Daewoo customer service is awful
I was very happy and content with my purchase until the pixels went bad in the TV and had to deal with their warranty department. They work with 2 local repair shops in our area (central FL very large area). After being referred to several shops who were doing work and being told they don't work with Daewoo anymore I should have know then that this would be an ordeal. 7...

They work with 2 local repair shops in our area (central FL very large area). After being referred to several shops who were doing work and being told they don't work with Daewoo anymore I should have know then that this would be an ordeal. 7 weeks later 5 without the TV I still can't get a simple question answered. When will my replacement TV be delivered. I have worked with other manufaturer's before with defective products and have never experienced the things I have with Daewoo. DON'T BUY DAEWOO.

2.0 out of 5 stars Limited Warranty, August 12, 2005
This review is from: Daewoo DTS-42 42-Inch Widescreen Flat-Panel Plasma EDTV (Electronics)
I have had the DTS-42 for about 2 months now. It has been a good t.v until the last several days. I have a small horozontal yellow line in the t.v on the left side. I called 800-Daewoo and they gave me a service center in my area that did not exist, and the phone number was wrong. Their web doesn't give any service addresses in my area at all. Still waiting for a reply from e-mail. Good t.v if it doesn't break. If it breaks, good luck. Spend the extra money for reassurance.

My Daewoo DTS-42 plasma was manufactured by NEC, a respectable plasma manufacturer, then rebadged as Daewoo. You can shine a flashlight in the back of the unit and see that it says NEC all over the place. I also verified this on AVSforum.com. I picked this up the day after Thanksgiving at CompUSA for less than $1500 (stand and speakers included), an absolute bargain at the time. The picture quality is great with dvd, average with standard analog (my TIVO looks ok on it) and excellent with HDTV. (Don't get me started on the "EDTV cannot show true HDTV issue" this TV will display a fantastic HDTV signal a la 1080i or 720p). I compared this to a Panasonic 6UY version that my dad has. Side by side, the Panny looks sharper with some analog content and has a deeper black level, the HDTV content looked sharp on both. The Panny was also about $600 more than the Daewoo with no stand or speakers. Remember that the picture settings (contrast, sharpness etc.) make a huge difference in picture quality so be sure to take this into account when looking at any television, proper calibration is a must for a plasma TV. Buy digital video essentials or Avia calibration disc (or if you are cheap, just use the THX optimizer on the Star Wars discs). This tv is an amazing value and I am very happy with the unit. As with most large purchases, I skip the store sponsored "service plans/extended warranty" that run about $250 and I instead use a credit card like MC or Visa that offers extended warranty coverage as part of the card benefits.

1.0 out of 5 stars terrible, October 28, 2006
This review is from: Daewoo DTS-42 42-Inch Widescreen Flat-Panel Plasma EDTV (Electronics)
within 14-15 months of purchase, i developed a pixel line. Daewoo noted that while this was a rare occurrence, especially for such a new set, the warranty was the warranty, and it was out of warranty (warranty period was one year). They would fix it for $500, but only warranty it for 30 days following repair. After two more months I had over 25 of these "rare" pixel lines. I finally gave in and sent it in. Now, 31 days into the 30 warranty period, the power turns off within seconds. (the unit is on an expensive surge protector, which itself is on a whole-house surge protector, and no other equipment not bearing the name "Daewoo" is malfunctioning. I will not buy again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Decent TV with awful service! Stay away from Daewoo junk!, July 2, 2006
This review is from: Daewoo DTS-42 42-Inch Widescreen Flat-Panel Plasma EDTV (Electronics)
I got this TV from CompUSA when it was on sale. A couple of good points:

Picture looks decent with standard cable. On some channels, football looks 'wierd', when the players are standing still, they are blurry/pixeled? But otherwise, a decent picture.

Speakers actually sounds decent, even though they are listed as 5 watts!

But I'm on my 3rd TV, and I was supposed to get this one replaced too, but Daewoo service has stopped returning my calls. They all had the same problem: a vertical or horizontal line appears in the screen. One of the replacements had the lines when I recieved it, and it was a refurbished unit, so I guess it was never fixed right to begin with.

Now the unit is no longer under warranty, and Daewoo refuses to fix it. When I asked for a manager to call me back, they never do.

I guess I should have bought the extended warranty from CompUSA. 14 months after purchase and I'm stuck with broken TV number 3. Thanks Daewoo!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Plasma, August 26, 2005
This review is from: Daewoo DTS-42 42-Inch Widescreen Flat-Panel Plasma EDTV (Electronics)
I had this plasma for six months and got a pixel line. I called daewwoo direct via their web site. They replaced my unit 4 weeks later. I thought this was very reasonable due to the size and shipping of the unit. Picture Quality is great. Price you cannot beat. Remember its a plasma and not a Tube tv. Problems may arise as I got. If it happens, it should happen within the warranty period. Reduce the contrast for the first 200 hrs. This will help. overall I give Daewoo an "A" for service and quality.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible. Never Buy Daewoo Again!, December 27, 2006
This review is from: Daewoo DTS-42 42-Inch Widescreen Flat-Panel Plasma EDTV (Electronics)
I also bought this Daewoo DTS-42 plasma EDTV about one and a half year ago. Exactly 12 months and 2 weeks later, it started developing some vertical scan lines, and occasionally shut itself off automatically. Initially there were only 2 or 3 vertical lines but it quickly develops into more than two dozen. Warranty had expired and Daewoo don't even have a local service center. I thought the problem was due to hot weather so I put it away for half a year. A few weeks ago I tried to hook it up for another test. This time there are more than a hundred vertical scan lines. Totally useless now.

I swear I will NEVER NEVER EVER buy another DAEWOO product ever again, and will tell all people I know to do the same. I thought I bought it cheap but it was junk!

2.0 out of 5 stars Vertical Line problem after 2 years of use, July 29, 2006
By
This review is from: Daewoo DTS-42 42-Inch Widescreen Flat-Panel Plasma EDTV (Electronics)
I have had my Daewoo for A little over two years. I am now experiencing a problem with a vertical line that is about 2 inches thick running down the middle of the screen. It comes and goes. Mostly it is there. I purchased my TV with a Platinum Mastercard which extended my warranty of 1 year by an extra year. Unfortunately, I missed the opportunity to capitalize on that benefit by about 2 months. Now, I too, have a tv that I paid about $2000 for that is on its way out the door. Pretty sad when I consider the fact that my old picture tube tv that I owned prior to this one cost me about $300 and lasted more than 10 years. After Reading all the reviews I am leftwondering if its even worth trying to get it repaired. I checked with Daewoo customer service and there are NO service centers in my area. Im very dissapointed in my purchase and suggest anybody who may be considering a purchase of this TV to think again. From what I am reading, odds are against you enjoying this TV for very long.

4.0 out of 5 stars After using bluray disk, picture is horrible, blacked out faces or mirror like faces. Is this burned image?, November 10, 2009
This review is from: Daewoo DTS-42 42-Inch Widescreen Flat-Panel Plasma EDTV (Electronics)
I really have a question more than a review, although I will tell you we have loved the tv from day one. The only drawback for some may have been there are NO internal speakers. We already had Bose surround sound, so it was no big deal for us. We were just put off that the salesman at HHGregg never told us this. We bought it about 4 years ago and last month I bought a bluray player for it. One, the tv doesn't have the hdml port, I know, we couldn't believe it either, so we used the red, green, blue (RGB) to connect them. We watched ONE bluray movie, it was beautiful. The next day the regular tv from our Dish DVR picture was mirrored in some areas and too dark to make out in others. No, we didn't pause the tv, we know better than that. But would the bluray have caused this? I tryed backing off the brightness and contrast, everything makes it worse. I know it is an older model, but we don't watch a whole lot of tv, there are days we may not even turn it on. Any ideas out there? Is there a way to fix it without paying an arm and a leg? Or should we trash it? We were thinking about buying either a led or lcd in the future, just not right now. Thanks for any help you can offer. Appreciate it.

1.0 out of 5 stars GARBAGE, November 29, 2006
By
I shouldn't even give this item one star. Don't buy it. Avoid Daewoo like the plague that this company is. They manufacture GARBAGE and should be BANNED from the shores of North America.

This DTS42 developed red horizontal lines less than two years after a very expensive purchase. Daewoo refused to repair it, unless they could sucker me out of another $500.

No thanks. I'm not one of those P.T. Barnum types who is born every minute. My money stays in my wallet. Daewoo manufactures GARBAGE. Avoid all Daewoo products, if at all possible.
