Daewoo DVG-9000N DVD Player: I like it.,
By Noel (San Bruno, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Daewoo DVG-9000N Progressive-Scan DVD Player (Electronics)
The Daewoo DVG-9000N DVD Player is a very good machine if you can get one that is reliable. Mine worked just fine right out of the box. Quite a few have had to return their 9000's. I left mine on 24 hours a day for the first week to burn it in and test it for reliability. So far it has been dependable and all functions work properly.I bought it because I could connect it directly to a computer monitor via its VGA output. The picture quality in that mode (progressive scan VGA to computer monitor) is stunning. With the s-video and composite video outputs, the PQ very good, especially at the price. I have not tried the progressive component outputs. The remote control is very comprehensive. The remote can alter pitch on DVD movie soundtracks as well as on the Karoake microphone input. Changing actors' voices can be very entertaining. I downloaded a firmware update, burned it onto CD-R and loaded it into the DVG-9000. Now I can bypass/access all region codes and the Macrovision is disabled. Before the update, the Macrovision was permanently active even with non copy-protected DVD's. The picture quality improved slightly after the Macrovision was turned off. The unit is not as well built as the big name brands but it offers a wealth of features at its price range. My CD-R's and CD-RW's and MP3's play just fine. Highly recommended.

This unit has suprises both: good &bad!Nice features about this model: 120-240V ! NTSC/PAL ! Possible regions 1-6(8)playback! Multistandard--it plays on any TV ! Karaoke+pitch adjustment/mic level Nice simple remote control--with more functions than you'd expect! Nice display on the unit! Plays all kinds of discs: DVD/VCD/SVCD/DVCD/CD/CD-RW/CD-R/MP3/MPG2 Quite good-looking silver finish! 5.1-channel surround sound decoder! (1sub/2sur/2main/1center-channel analog output!) Optical and coaxial digital-audio output for Dolby Digital/DTS S-Video/VGA outputs Motion-zoom (1.5x/2x/4x) BAD NEWS: Component-video output is progressive-scan only; requires HD-ready TV!! Blue lines during some dvd playbacks, every 5-30 minutes!!!!(press stop/play and lines are gone for a while!) Macrovision ON!! No bypass! [Though this is case with 99% of all DVD players.] [poor] plastic /metal finish Manual very poor! [poor] filling remote! Some quality problems!!! But!!--good value anyway!!! All in One! No more problems right now!!! I give only 3 stars because of this blue horizontal lines from time to time!!!

Component output misleading,

I odered this DVD player because of the features listed and one of the most important features was the component video output (which is clearly listed as a feature), but the component video output of this player only works in progressive scan modes which makes it incomptable with most all anaolg tv sets with component input(only puts out progessive scan and not interlaced scan which gives you nothing but a scrambled mess on a regular tv set when using the component video). This was a major disappointment for me which took a lot of research to find out as you are not told this anywhere. I am hoping that Daewoo has a firmware or software upgrade/fix for this, as otherwise this seems to be a great unit, but not worth giving up the use of my component video inputs on my Sony KV-36FS17. If Daewoo can not help me and alot of others with this component video problem ...alot of these players [will go] back and they also need to stop advertising them as having component video outputs (unless they add that using the component vidoe outputs requires a hdtv set), as many others units have a switchable output for the progressive scan so you can use it on non hdtv.

Amazon sells/sold at least 3 daewoo dvd players: 3000N, 5000N, 9000N. The 9000N IS progressive scan and VGA out, BUT it does NOT have component video out. the 5000N has component video out, but does not have progressive scan. The 3000N has neither. All 3 have S-video and regular video (composite?) out. This info is nearly impossible to figure out from the info you get anywhere, including the manuals, which are unclear.

At the price, the fully loaded Daewoo DVG 9000N is definitely a steal. I was pretty amazed at the finish and the new look which is a marked improvement over the DVG 3000N/ 5000N.I got my box from Amazon and I'm quiet happy with the performance thus far. I have not yet used the features like MP3 or Progressive Scan, but I can tell you that the DVD/CD/VCD quality is very good and easily comparable to the high end models in the market. I have hooked it up to my Bose Home Theater system and I don't see the need to go to the movies anymore. Overall I'am a satisfied customer.

I also have the 3000N, and this one is worth the extra $. Simple additions: power on the remote, *much* better display, directional controls on the unit.Difference: substitute one karaoke mike for two phone jacks. Also adds progressive scan, *VGA* output (along with component video, optical audio).

Good features, bad quality,

The features for this unit are impressive - progressive scan, conversion PAL-NTSC, you can make this player accept DVD from other regions, VGA out. But what's the point if basic playback doesn't work. After 10 minutes of playing it starts flickering, every 5-10 seconds. This was very annoying. When it didn't flicker, the picture was not great, but acceptable. White color was slightly shimmering. I was using two other players with progressive scan - Panasonic RP-56 and Philips Q50 and their picture is by far superior. If you look for a good inexpensive progressive scan DVD player and you don't need multi-region capability, take RP-56. I haven't tested well enough Q50 but so far it is really great. I've heard it freezes sometimes (once or twice during a movie) for a second but so far I didn't see it. These both players have the Faroudja FLI2200 de-interlacing chip and you really can see the difference if you have HDTV. The bottom line: buying 9000N is like a lottery - feel happy if you get a good unit. I sent mine already back to Amazon.

I highly recommend this machine. Not only is the picture and sound great but you can play DVDs from any region. It also has a built in PAL to NTSC converter so that you can play any DVD in the world. Amazon UK has a lot of great titles that are not availble in the U.S. and will not play on a standard region 1 DVD player.

This review is from: Daewoo DVG-9000N Progressive-Scan DVD Player (Electronics)
I loved the features of this player, but the many defects greatly disappointed me. I got the 9000N with progresive scan in anticipation of a future TV upgrade. The 9000N played my one brand new DVD perfectly but had problems with all others: Color picture would switch to b/w briefly, skip or freeze during playback of discs with which my mom's Sony 360 had no problems. Simple playback should not be an issue! When the picture stutters, the machine does not respond to remote control & I have to turn the unit off on its main body. Also, the disc tray cover does not consitently flip close. Other owners have experienced many of these same problems. I have heard that Daewoo's 5700 is made in Korea by a different manufacturer (TYT) & is perhaps more reliable. However, it doesn't have the same features as 9000N (lacks Progressive Scan, VGA out, optical out). Would be great if it did. |
