From Booklist

Rowlands, who has been growing and showing dahlias for more than 30 years, begins with a brief history of this beautiful plant, which now boasts more than 20,000 varieties. One chapter describes physical characteristics, and another explains the breakdown of groups within the genus. Rowlands gives detailed instructions on cultivation, which include data on pest and disease control, watering, and storing the tubers. There are chapters on propagation, raising new varieties, and exhibitions at horticultural shows. Rowlands lists more than 400 cultivars, giving their origin when known, along with a brief description of each plant. This comprehensive guide has 70 stunning color photographs and 15 line drawings. Review

Few people have had the opportunity to sit at the fount of knowledge and drink of composite lore. Rowland's bookprovides dahlia growers that distinct pleasure. -- Wayne Shantz, Dahlias of Today 2000

It is a thoroughly good read and a book no self-respecting dahlia grower would want to be without.(Dave Spencer, The Garden (Royal Hort. Soc) , December 1999) -- (Royal Hort. Soc, December 1999)

The book is very well organized with all pertinent information necessary to grow these flowers. -- Marty Figley, Garden Spot - Observer & Eccentric, March 30, 2000

5.0 out of 5 stars Dahlia's for everyone, December 13, 2004
Whether you are a serious grower or just need some extra flowers for your garden this is a great book.Dahlias are generaly easy to grow, but can be tricky to grow well.It contains a lot of info on the history, culture, habit, propagation and care. It is relevent to both northern and southern hemispheres as it has a season converter and is in metric and imperial. The photos are sharp and clear and cover everything from petal shapes to full heads. This is a great general reference book.

I am brand new to the Dahlia world and bought this book as a primer. I had done some research online and everything I found online was nicely condensed in this book. It teaches you the basics such as planting and care plus teaches you all of the 'codes' for sizes, colors, forms, etc. It really is very helpful to someone who knows little about dahlias. Plus, the pictures are beautiful and nicely identifies the plant form, so you can learn some of the various types.
