The two bikes I received last week had SRAM DualDrive II internally geared hubs which I expect is far better than the no-name hubs listed in the description. This model was selected for its wide range of gearing as it will be used for serious road work around Vail, Colorado. Did not get the chance to try it out when I was there because of poor packaging by Dahon. Both bikes were received with bent shift rods (available from Amazon for about $6) however a call to Dahon resulted in a new one sent out without question. Haven't called on the second bike yet however I did order 4 more rods on the assumption that I might need them. The first bike arrived with some obvious contusions near the rear axle and I wasn't surprised that the rod was bent. They are heat treated and if you straighten them out they break. The next day the second arrived with the carton in good shape. I carefully unpacked it and found another bent shift rod. There were no witness marks that would have indicated that the damage happened in shipping. The rods can be installed by hand. Suggest that they ship loose. Also there is a PVC pipe that is where the seat tube normally sits. It serves to support the top of the carton so that they can be stacked without crushing the box. Once I found out what they were I knocked them out with a broom handle. There was no instructions mentioning the pipe. The call to Dahon was answered quickly and competently. The service rep explained what the pipe was and committed to shipping a new shift rod which in fact was received shortly thereafter. Without a shift rod the system defaults to the lowest gearing which kept me from trying it out in Vail. Upon returning to Houston I got the new rod, installed it and tried it out on flat land.Read more ›

I bought this bike as an used condition for 8 months. I would say this is a wonderful, reliable folding bike for hills and touring.

Why I say that:
1) It is easy, quick to fold and folding small in package. Easy to travel with other transportation and save space for storage.
2) It rides really smoothly. The frame and tires filter out a lot of road imperfections.
3) 24 gears for the folding bike!! 8 for uphill, 8 for flat road, 8 for downhill. It can take you everywhere except ocean.
4) It comes with fender and rack, necessary for carrying stuff for long ride under different weather.

Problem:
1) None. If I have to pick, the aluminium seat post and hand post is hard to clean. Maybe I don't know how.

Buy it if you like:
1) Climbing hills or riding long hours and want a folding bike for easy carrying and save space, and
2) Spending less than $1000 for a folding bike. I got my used one for $500.

Forget it if you:
1) want a folding bike for speed. It is not slow, but this is not the fastest folding bike for this budget.
2) are not looking for a folding bike in this budget.

I bought this bike to commute to/from work in Toronto and for an occasional joy ride. It has proven to be a very reliable and capable commuter, despite some minor flaws.
First, the packaging failed to protect the Dual SRAM pin in the back where the 3-gear clickbox is attached to back wheel. It was bent sideways but the bike mechanic was able to more or less straighten it, so I didn't have to order a replacement part. I highly recommend getting the bike tuned up at a professional shop, btw.
My first riding impression was that the bike was fast but the ride was harsh and not very stable due to very narrow stock tires. After about a week of suffering the pothole-rich Toronto roads, I upgraded to Schwalbe Big Apple RaceGuard RLX Wire Bead Tires (20X2.0-Inch). A huge improvement! Suddenly, the ride is far less wobbly and I don't feel every pothole on the road. An added bonus is that the bike looks quite a bit more badass. As a colleague of mine put it, "It now looks more like a bike and less like a toy." The only issue was I had to remove the stock fenders as there wasn't enough clearance above the chunky Big Apples.
I still wanted to have the fenders, so I picked up the SKS Rowdy Front and Rear Bicycle Fender Set (Black, 20-24 Inch) at Amazon. Both upgrades aren't particularly expensive, but I wish Dahon would include thicker stock tires as they do on some other models they sell.
As I already mentioned, the bike is very fast for a folder and handles well (with upgraded tires). Hills aren't an issue with 24 speeds at your disposal. There are some squeaks if you push it hard, but I guess it is to be expected of a folding frame. Gears shift smoothly and I am generally pleased with the components/build quality.

I have had my Dahon for over 6 months now and I love it. I took my bike to an expert bike mechanic to set it up and tune it up initially (which I recommend). I love that I can drive to location where I take my bike out of my sedan's trunk and have it ready to take off within a minute. And the bike is out of sight when in the trunk so I keep it there most of the time ready to drive to great bike trails here in Albuquerque. The bike is rugged and solid and can handle my 200 lbs. of weight no problem. Like the 27 speeds but I tend to use the middle speeds the most. I bought a more cushy seat which was easy to install myself. I am a casual biker so I don't take it on rough trails (mainly paved). Recommend having your bike mechanic put in green slime in the tires.
