2.0 out of 5 stars Altered Version of NIV
While the whole of the NIV is in this book as far as I can tell, Commentary is inserted into the biblical text and not clearly marked. I had to check this book against authorized versions to catch this. Genesis 2 is the first instance of this you will see if you start at the beginning. Here Smith's description of portions are in CAPS and it breaks up the readability of...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent way to get into the Word ... starting in Genesis, February 12, 1999
By A Customer
This is a chronological compilation of the scripture with great jewels of wisdom by the editor that explain what you are about to read in the next few verses. As a Bible student for many years, this edition has captured me, even in those geneologies, because of the explanations that tell me what is about to happen or why something is important and how it fits with events in other places in scripture. I highly recommend this to anyone at any level of spiritual maturity.

5.0 out of 5 stars The way to read and study the bible, May 28, 2006
Last year I made a decision that I wanted to become a more spiritual person, and I felt one of the keys to that was to read the Bible. I filled out a calendar with due dates for each of the various books and started out - but failed miserably. A few weeks ago I was playing golf with a new acquaintance and he mentioned a daily reading bible that he had found to be a great help in reading and studying the bible. The chronological layout, he felt, was the greatest asset.

I found my way to a nearby Christian bookstore (the first time in my life) and looked at the verion my golf partner had recommended. It seemed like it would work, but then I found this version sitting next to it on the shelf. Immediately I was attracted to it for several reasons, but the most compelling was the author's explanations and introduction to the different sections. That extra information seemed to make the passages so much easier to understand.

So I've been reading this book for a while now - and actually keeping to my schedule - and I have to give it five stars for ease of reading and understanding (and keeping me on schedule!).

If you want to successfully read the bible I suppose any chronoligical version would do. But if you want to understand it and get some real enjoyment and knowledge from your reading then I can't think of a better purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for new believer and mature disciple alike, August 21, 2001

I have been interested in reading the bible chronologically for many years and have done so several times with the assistance of Chronological reading lists. This bible compares with the best of them and is much easier and simpler to use. Reading about the events of the bible in the order that they happened opens up the scriptures in an amazing way. Also has interesting historical and background information in an easy to read and understand format. If you want a little more out of your daily devotions this book is for you.

Although I've read the NIV Bible before, the Daily Bible has put the whole Bible in perspective for me. For the first time, I have been able to put pieces together -- it has come to life, so to speak. I highly recommend this Bible for anyone wanting to strengthen their understanding of God's word.

This Chronological Bible made the OT come to life & make sense. The author's commentary before the major sections were excellent. This is the best money I've ever spent.

This review is from: The Daily Bible: In Chronological Order 365 Daily Readings (Hardcover)
I have been a Christian for many years, and every year, start out with the good intentions of reading the Bible in its entirety THIS year. Then, life gets in the way....and you know the rest of the story. Guilt and frustration kept me from picking up where I left off. Well, with this Bible, no more guilt and frustration!

Not only does this arrangement of the scriptures make the Biblical story more understandable for anyone, it is much easier to approach the Bible as a 'book' as one would any other book...from front to back cover!

Don't get bogged down by the dates at the beginning of each reading. If you get behind, just put a bookmark in and pick up where you left off. The dates are an incentive but not a discouragement. One can just keep reading page by page til the book is read ;-)

I have become somewhat of a crusader for this Bible, buying them for friends and family. I would not rely on this for my ONLY bible, but for daily reading of God's Word, it is the best I have found.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful way to introduce or reintroduce you to the Bible, believer or not, May 19, 2006

This review is from: The Daily Bible: In Chronological Order 365 Daily Readings (Hardcover)
Since "The Daily Bible" is in chronological order the sections read like stories. The NIV is a very widely used, respected and readable version of the Bible. This Bible is not a STUDY Bible, but a Bible to READ. You may think you want another translation of the Bible, and are not inclined to buy this one but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this version for its readability and "devotional" comments which are really short study helps. You can consult other translations when you feel that you have a question.

"The Daily Bible" is fun to read, whether as an excellent choice for the first time, or to follow up after you have read all or parts of the Bible and would like to experience it chronologically. "The Daily Bible" is especially useful and fun if you want to read the Bible as it progresses, each part in time and context. In this way you are also more likely to remember what you have read.

I also recommend the Bible for readers whose main interest is in literature. The comments by F. LaGard Smith are excellent and invaluable to orient you to the historical situation, characters, and meaning. Other chronological Bibles do not have his comments. This is a complete Bible.

The layout is a great help for readability as the chapters and verses are indicated in the margin not within the text. In this way the reader just keeps reading with no distractions. There are a few explanatory footnotes when necessary. Each section has a short, useful introduction.

I have been reading this Bible for the last 6 weeks and find it wonderful. I have another chronological version of the Bible but prefer this one for its size and COMMENTS. This is really a motivating way to read the Bible, and you would miss F. Lagard Smith's comments in another version. The comments are extremely useful and insightful, so now rather than read my other larger print version, I am purchasing one of these.

One of the greatest examples of the enjoyability of "The Daily Bible" is the story of David from his lowly beginnings to persecuted to King to his death. "The Daily Bible" includes the Psalms of David that apply to each episode. If you want to piece together the David "story" or any other with a regular Bible it becomes drudgery.

The pages are thin, which keeps the Bible a handy size. If you want to mark it, get a non bleed-through Accent Bible marker or use a non-bleed through pen or pencil.

The compact version (6.1 x 4.2 x 1.3 inches) is VERY portable, though its print is quite small.
I am a "senior" now and have trouble reading the footnotes in the compact version. Note, I'm not reading my other larger print chronological version but buying the normal size copy of this one with F. LaGard Smith's comments, which I love. For those of you who want a Bible to put in a purse or read in bed, the compact one is great if your eyes are good with small print.

What a relief!! Proverbs are grouped according to subject, Psalms are next to their historical narratives, prophets are with their contemporaries. Meaning becomes clearer when the setting is clearer. Devotionals are helpful without becoming Biblical dissertations. I love this Bible!
