5.0 out of 5 stars From Mississippi To Mali Continued, July 3, 2005
This review is from: Daily Bread (Audio CD)
Corey Harris has journeyed into the past and discovered the future. He has managed to find the roots of the music he loves so much and at the same time, give it a gentle nudge forward. This album of African folk blues and reggae is strong from start to finish. Corey's in this amazing, creative place that few artists ever reach. I look forward to each and every release of his. Along with fellow bluesman Otis Taylor, he's one of the most important musicians of our time. You shouldn't miss out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your "traditional'' blues disc .., July 20, 2005
This review is from: Daily Bread (Audio CD)
Most blues fans know Coreys name by now , he is one of the more interesting roots musicians of the current crop , i.e Keb Mo' (Kevin Moore) Alvin Y Hart , etc . this effort is not styled on Charlie Patton or Robert Johnson or Big Joe Williams , but on Corey Harris . His musical journey has taken him to this recording . I love the variety , the reggae feel on some tracks; his treatment of O.V. Wrights soul classic Nickel And A Nail is cool . the nice thing is the inclusion of Olu Dara on a couple of cuts .. nice move! Great sounds/instrumentation .. nice to hear a Hammond Organ again ..a great listen .

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, July 14, 2005

There is not a weak track on this delightful new recording, a combination of West African, Delta acoustic and Reggae roots music. They flow together in a soothing and uplifting way, a blend of playful songcraft and masterful instrumentation. Corey Harris, like fellow Coloradan Otis Taylor, is the real thing - making modern music firmly rooted in the African/Delta acoustic blues sound. This is the music to cure all your blues and make you whole.

I realize that to purists, he is not a true blues artist. I cannot comment on that, as I lack the requisite expertise to do so.

I do know that this album rocks. It has reggae and African, world music influences. Just great. I am not in love with 100% so I gave it 4 stars.

Buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Daily Bread, September 14, 2005
This review is from: Daily Bread (Audio CD)
Corey Harris' latest offering is solid throughout. Corey is able to blend a lot of different types of blues together with some other genres of music. There's some reggae touches on a few songs; some "world music" touches thrown in some others. This makes the disc nice and varied and not-repetitive.

The songs themselves are mostly very good and very catchy (but not catchy in a corny, lame sort of way). You may find yourself singing the chorus/humming the melody while you're sitting at your desk.

There's a couple songs I wasn't too crazy about - but they were just decent - nothing on here is bad.

So, overall, it's a very good cd. I found mine used and it was well worth that price. Daily Bread is a good cd in a time when music, in general, is lacking in talent. Keep up the good work, Corey!
