4.0 out of 5 stars This will keep your child occupied...
....but its only stuff they already learned in Kindergarten. So do not expect your child to learn a whole bunch of new stuff.

I still liked this Book for it gave my child the opportunity to show me what skills she had and what we still needed to work on < counting in 5's for example>. I liked how every week had a different color and that the weekdays are...

3.0 out of 5 stars A little young
I bought this item for my daughter who is going into first grade. I found it a bit young for her as she is already a reader and ready for some challenging activities. I will be ordering the next step.

....but its only stuff they already learned in Kindergarten. So do not expect your child to learn a whole bunch of new stuff.

I still liked this Book for it gave my child the opportunity to show me what skills she had and what we still needed to work on < counting in 5's for example>. I liked how every week had a different color and that the weekdays are showed on the bottom of the page. I also liked the "diary "for every week. It is basically a page where you can check off the pages your child has completed how much he or she was reading everyday and writing down events that happened on every day.

The paper quality of this Activity book is very good; often activity books have thin pages that easily rip when the child tries to erase a mistake.

In all a good book to keep your childs brain on a constant level so he or she won't forget what they have learned thus far!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging, June 4, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Daily Summer Activities Moving from Kindergarten to 1st Grade (Paperback)
This activity book is well organized and colorful. My son finds the activites interesting, but requires adult assistance with the instructions. Some of the activities are below his ability (average to above average at a better California public school). If your student is above average, consider getting one level higher book. Reasonable amount of work for summer vacation, 2 pages per day. Enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars good for keeping skills up, July 28, 2005

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I purchased this book and the 1st to 2nd grade book for my son who will be entering the 1st grade. I thought the math portion of this book was way too easy which is the main reason why I also bought the 1st/2nd grade book. The other parts are good for reinforcement, but do not present any challenges. I use it to give my son a sense of mastery. The math in the 1st/2nd grade book is just right and provides a healthy challenge in the other areas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great activities!, March 6, 2011

I debated between 4 and 5 stars for this book and settled with 5 stars.

I understand the other reviewers saying this book was too easy and I do agree with this on some level. However, if you're trying to teach your children to take responsibility for their homework and work independently then this is the right level. I've purchased the higher level as well (which I knew my child would be capable of doing and I thought it would give them the extra advantage for entering the next grade), however, it led to too much stress for both of us as I ended up hovering over my child explaining things and making sure they kept on track and didn't get overwhelmed and distracted. My child resented the time the higher level took and quickly became equally frustrated and resentful with dreaded summer homework.

I don't think the small coloring sections are a waste of time (as another reviewer commented), as it is still about developing fine motor skills at this age.

The only complaint I have with this book is the way that the alphabet is organized.
You open the book and it starts with the letter B! This immediately leads the child to ask, "Where's A?".
Then it progresses C, D, (misses E), F, G, H, (misses I), J, K, L, M, N, (misses O), P, Q, R, S, (then it inserts A), T, (misses U), V, (then it inserts E), W, X, (then it inserts I), Y, Z, (then it inserts O and then U). This is just too confusing to explain to a 5 year old and there is no rationale for it at the beginning of the book.

I love how the book is nicely organized (with the exception of the alphabet issue as noted above) into 10 weeks with a double sided page for each weekday and the great colorful activities on a nice quality paper.

This is a good tool to keep your child refreshed and ready for the next school year. My son likes the fact that he could quickly get through the 2 pages a day. He enjoys being able to color the stars when he completes a page.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great For Beginning Studaent, March 28, 2010
This review is from: Daily Summer Activities Moving from Kindergarten to 1st Grade (Paperback)
I bought this for my daughter who will be entering the first grade this fall. When it arrived, I skimmed through it and was surprised to see that she's already adept at a lot of the tasks in the book. We are from California though where Kindergarten goes 6 hours and they are working on double digit subtraction though. We just relocated to Oregon where they have 2 hour days and are just starting basic addition. It will depend on your childs skill level.

I recommend this book for kids 4-6 who may not yet have been exposed to much schooling.

4.0 out of 5 stars summer activites, June 28, 2009
This review is from: Daily Summer Activities Moving from Kindergarten to 1st Grade (Paperback)
good starting point for work over the summer, I don't like all the coloring- takes too much time and teaches nothing. I would recommend more than just this daily to really make a difference in your child's learning.

3.0 out of 5 stars A review of kindergarden, June 27, 2005

I should have listened to the previous reviewer. This book is too easy. I bought this book so my daughter could get a jump start on first grade. This is more like a review of kindergarden. I think some kindergardeners might benefit from this book but it will be the ones who missed basic concepts. A lot of this book is reviewing the sounds letters make. By the time my daughter finished kindergarden she could read as could most of her classmates. The vocabulary words are all basic site words you should know in order to graduate from kindergarden. The bottom line is if you are going to buy this book it means you are a caring parent who is concerned about your childs education. If you are that kind of parent you will have undoubtedly worked with your child in the past and your child will be way beyond this material. I am passing my copy onto a preschool child and am going to continue to look for something that will be challenging and teach my daughter something new.
