Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Dragonwagon (The Bean Book, etc.), children's book writer and co-owner of the Dairy Hollow House in Eureka Springs, Ark., where Brown was an innkeeper, offers 400 recipes in the style of "nouveau'zarks" cuisine, a crazy-quilt combination of French haute and nouvelle cuisines, hearty Ozarks country and natural foods cookery. The offerings include Southern favorites like hashed brown quiche, angel biscuits, Savannah peanut butter pie and country-fried chicken with milk gravy. Special attention is devoted to vegetarian dishes, picnic fare, grains and pasta, fruit and chocolate delicacies, pies and cakes, and utilizing regional ingredients. The narrative style is verbose but agreeably enthusiastic; menus are suggested and the tempting recipes are easy to follow, but if readers get stuck they can peruse the glossary or call the authors whose phone number is included. Illustrations not seen by PW. Better Homes and Gardens Cook Book Club alternate.

More About the Author

Crescent Dragonwagon, the author of the James Beard Award-winning Passionate Vegetarian, The Cornbread Gospels, Dairy Hollow House Soup & Bread Cookbook, many children's books, and two novels, has just completed Bean by Bean.

Dragonwagon is a Southern Yankee: though born in New York, for 18 years she was innkeeper/chef/co-owner of Dairy Hollow House, an acclaimed country inn in the Ozark Mountain community of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, where she resided for 36 years. But, since 2002, she has lived in Westminster West, Vermont.

Dragonwagon has the distinction of having prepared beans and cornbread for a president (Bill Clinton), titled royalty (Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia), a world-renowned feminist (Betty Friedan) and Marilyn Monroe's first biographer (Maurice Zolotow). She teaches two writing workshops, Deep Feast: Writing the World through Food, and Fearless Writing, around the world (the latter, she teaches once a year, in the Whole Enchilada version, from her own home hilltop in the Green Mountains). She has appeared on Good Morning America, Today, TVFN, & CNN.

She lives, writes, and cooks in the 1795 farmhouse which once belonged to her aunt, at which she spent summers when a child. She shares the place with her partner, filmmaker David Koff, and, often, numerous well-fed friends. An ardent gardener, she's currently growing 4 different varieties of bush beans, and 5 of pole beans. .. under the supervision of her large and amiable tabby cat, Cattywhompus (who can usually be found rolling in the catmint).

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! One of my all-time favorite cookbooks, July 13, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Dairy Hollow House Cookbook: Over 400 Delectable Recipes from America's Famed Ozark Inn (Hardcover)
This book is outstanding. The recipes are all tried-and-true, comparatively easy to make, and absolutely wonderful. And each is preceded by a warm, interesting little anecdote -- which a friend once described as "proof that somebody actually ate this". I really love this book, and cannot sufficiently recommend it. (I have all the cookbooks written by this author, and strongly recommend them, as well.)

My favorite cookbook! These are wholesome, healthy and delicious recipes. This cookbook is loaded with the kinds of foods you prepare for the people you love the most. Warm and witty writing and lucsious recipes make this cookbook a keepsake. This book is a great gift for anyone who loves to entertain and loves to cook.

Garlic Spaghetti. It's the ultimate "family only night" comfort food. Many other recipes are terrific as well. Cornbread - comes to mind. I have read this cover to cover and always come up with great meal plans when I use it.
