Biography

Long Island alt-rock band Brand New released their debut album Your Favorite Weapon in 2001 to mixed reviews from critics. However, it was enough to earn them support slots on tours with bands like Dashboard Confessional, Taking Back Sunday and Incubus. Deja Entendu (French for "heard before") followed in 2003, and was generally better received. It was considered a more mature album than the… Read more in Amazon's Brand New Store

About the Artist

BRAND NEW

In the middle of the year 2000, after years of playing together in previous bands, Brian Lane, Jesse Lacey, and Garrett Tierney recruited guitarist, and soon to be friend Vincent Accardi and formed Brand New. After a year or so of "doing their time" and the obligatory, and seemingly endless runs of self booked shows and tours, the Long Island quartet finally recorded and released their first record, Your Favorite Weapon. As it set the course for the next decade of music the four youths were to embark on, the record also established what would become both a longtime musical partnership and friendship with local Producer/Engineer, Mike Sapone, who is sometimes referred to as a fifth member of the band.

As YFW went on to sell its 300,000 copies, the band delved into multiple U.S. tours, both headlining and supporting such bands as The Get Up Kids, Dashboard Confessional, and Finch. It was their friends in Finch who eventually took Brand New overseas to the United Kingdom in 2003 where the band played its first shows on foreign soil. In years to come the band would return many times, loyal to the following they had cultivated, headlining show after sellout show including Brixton Academy and Hammersmith Apollo as well as playing a short arena tour with Incubus. The four NY youths also received coveted festival slots at Reading/Leeds, Glastonbury, and Give It a Name.

In June 2003 Brand New released their beloved and best selling, Deja Entendu, which they recorded in North Carolina with producer Steven Haigler. Besides the familiar US headlining tours the band was now playing, they followed the album with two music videos for the singles "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" and "Sic Transit Gloria...," as well as television appearances on Fuse TV, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and MTV.

"It was on the Warped Tour that summer that we had really started to notice things growing," said singer Jesse Lacey. "We entered Canada on that tour playing to hundreds of people each show, and then I guess people had started to listen to the record, and then the videos started rotation, and by the time we got back to the US we were playing to thousands every day. It was exciting, and we were grateful to be able to watch something we had created take new shape right in front of our eyes like that."

Deja Entendu was later certified Gold and is touted by many of the band's fans as their favorite album from the Long Island foursome.

That was until 2006's The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me.

Brand New's third album and major label debut, The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me, was released in November 2006. The work on Devil and God was long and went through several iterations. The band worked on some early tracks with renowned mixer/producer Rich Costey (Mars Volta, Ash) in East Hampton in the dead of winter; found themselves in Mississippi with veteran producer Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse, The Hives), and wound up finishing the recordings with old friend and producer Mike Sapone in the rural mountains of New England. Recruiting Jesse's cousin, Derrick Sherman, to join them on stage as a touring guitarist, more touring followed as Brand New teamed up with Dashboard Confessional and Thrice on separate North American tours, played Lollapalooza, and hit Australia and Europe with a mix of headline shows and festivals.

In late 2008 the band headed back into the studio to start work on their forthcoming album, Daisy, due for release September 22nd, 2009. This time the project started and finished in Mike Sapone's basement studio where the band slept, ate, and eventually eked out all the tracks for the record which was then mixed by Dave Sardy (Barkmarket, Cold War Kids, Oasis) in California. The band's schedule for the Spring/Summer of 2009 includes German festivals, a short UK tour, another Reading/Leeds appearance, and a startling return to the small clubs where it all began.

Brand New will embark on a North American headline tour in the fall of 2009.

Product Description

Formed in 2000, Brand New - Jesse Lacey, Vincent Accardi, Brian Lane and Garrett Tierney - have established critical acclaim for their innovative and boundary breaking music. The band's head-turning 2001 debut Your Favorite Weapon (Triple Crown Records) was followed by 2003's gold-certified sophomore album Deja Entendu, which Rolling Stone called a "masterpiece" and the New York Times proclaimed "extraordinary." In 2006 the band released their critically acclaimed major-label debut The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me (Interscope) and earned raves for yet another chapter in their genre defying career from SPIN, Blender, NY Times, LA Times, and Billboard among others. The band also appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night with Conan O'Brien to perform the hit single "Jesus."

Now the band is set to take us down another path with their defiant new album, Daisy. The new record features a collection of songs produced by longtime friend Mike Sapone and mixed by Dave Sardy (Rage Against the Machine, Cold War Kids, Slayer). Brand New continues to break the mold and in true Brand New form, they delve into new musical territory that will astonish both critics and fans alike.

4.0 out of 5 stars A different perspective., September 27, 2009
This review is from: Daisy (Audio CD)
I never write album reviews on Amazon, but after reading a few that were on here I felt compelled to share my experience with this album.

I never liked Brand New. I generally don't like mainstream music, and I really disliked the first couple of albums from these guys. A few months ago my girlfriend played The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me for me, saying that I needed to hear it. I was blown away. I couldn't believe that this band was the same one who put out Your Favorite Weapon.

Daisy is a monster. There is not a track that I do not love. I would actually rate it 4 1/2 stars if Amazon gave me the option. I'd recommend this album to people who are looking for something different, and are a little bit open minded about music. This is not a radio album, and it may not be an easy pill to swallow for past fans. If you're someone like me who isn't into the old Brand New, you may find this piece of art just as compelling as I have.

It has been my firm belief that, 20 years from now when we look back on the music this first decade of the millennium has brought us, Brand New's "The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me" would be remembered as one of, if not the best rock albums released in this decade. Not only is there not a single song that feels out of place or inferior, but every song is rich in lyrical and musical depth. Brand New has come a long way from their debut album, "Your Favorite Weapon" - that was clearly within the pop-punk genre and was a stand out debut full of raw energy and passion - and their follow up, "Deja Entendu" - that was more alt-rock/emo-esque than anything else, but still packed a punch. "The Devil and God..." saw them step clearly into the alt-rock genre, but featured lyrics with a depth not often found there. Each of their albums grow on you. I was initially taken aback by each of them. Probably because of how different they sounded with each progressive release. Even with my initial discomfort, I couldn't stop listening and found the lyrics haunting me.

Their new album, "Daisy," is much the same. Again, they shifted genres with their latest release, this time to straight up rock. There's no holding back here and while you can hear trademark Brand New sounds throughout, they still sound different. Once again, the lyrics are deep and haunting. I find them staying with me long after I pull the needle from the record or turn off my iPod.

The album begins with: "Far away from any road, / Roams my heart in solitude, / Where no passerby can see, / On life's highway God with thee, / Knowing when all else does fail, / Thy compassion shall prevail, / ... / On life's highway God with thee." and ends with: "Father, when my footsteps stray / Guide me back into Thy way / Father with thee, Oh, let me be / On life's highway, God with thee."

In-between that first verse and closing line of the album you have 11 songs that define soul searching and humanness. And like "The Devil and God..." said in "Jesus Christ," not a fear of death, but of what happens next or whether what is done here has any affect therein. The songs constantly bring you back to loss and love. And why not? These are two of the strongest and most penetrating emotions we will ever encounter in our lifetimes.

"Daisy" is different from anything else they've put out before, but they've continued their tradition of putting out solid album packed with intelligent and deep songs and improving over their previous effort, something I didn't believe was possible with the high quality of "The Devil and God..." The one difference that may keep this from reaching that same status as I believe "Devil and God" will is that the former is more approachable for the masses and "Daisy" is darker, louder, and not quite as accessible, but in my personal view an even more amazing album from a band that seems to effortlessly put out great music. This is their 2nd masterpiece in as many tries.

if they were clever enough to name their band "Brand New" knowing that they would create a new sound with each album. I would say yes, because I believe they are geniuses.
