Yes this may be one of the really bad movies I have ever see.
The trailer has everything of any importance that happens in the movie. The reason that the trailer might indeed be far better than the movie is that there are no fake ear piercing screams. Yes scream after scream after SCREAM, I stopped counting after 345 screams. Oh and by the way the cover has nothing to do with the movie nor does the name. Don't even rent this thing......just let it sink into oblivion all by itself.

psychological horror,
By F. Sod "Flyingsod" (Midwest America) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Daisy Chain (Amazon Instant Video)
Yes, this movie is slow paced. It's not bad though. Sometimes what people mean by "a slow movie" is a movie in which the plot stalls for a good deal of time. This movie is truly slow in that the story is constantly advanced but not in rapid fashion. It has some moodiness and atmosphere to it but not enough to make it spectacular. The cinematography is decent but there's no wow factor to it. Acting is fair throughout. The child star here is worth watching. She really really creeped me out. The telling stares this child pulled off were interesting. She could give a blank yet knowing stare in once scene and in another make her stare seem as if she wasn't even seeing this world but yet had a malevolence behind it. Kudos to the little girl and the director for her performance. About the plot... this is old world faerie mythos stuff. It's not some tiny person with wings casting spells and stealing babies breath. Expect nothing you wouldn't see in real life. And therein lies the true horror. You could encounter events and a person like this in real life... would it make you believe something supernatural was happening? Might you believe strongly enough to take action on another being? It is indeed horror but not gore horror, it's psychological horror. Not a psychological thriller mind you, but a psychological horror movie.

Fairies,
This review is from: Daisy Chain (DVD)
First of all, I would like to say that if you don't know much about fairy lore, then you will not understand this movie, and that is probably the reason for some of the negative reviews. For those who say the cover has nothing to do with the story in any way, it actually does. The figure on the cover is a fairy. She has thin wings on her back...Fairies in lore are not always depicted as being kind little creatures...They were originally considered malevolent creatures and one of the things they would do, including leprechauns, is steal/kidnap infants. That is most likely the reason for the fairy's grotesque appearance. A daisy chain is a garland that is sometimes made by people by tying daisies together...The child, Daisy seemingly "sets off" a "chain" of bad luck in the story. I watched the film several times, oftentimes replaying certain scenes in order to try and put the pieces all together. Which is something the director did a good job with. The audience has to really pay attention to the details of the film in order to figure out the "mystery" of the little girl. In my opinion, it could all be complete coincidence that the bad things happen to the different characters in the film and have nothing to do with Daisy causing them. It is obvious, of course that she was abused, living in the shed, being dirty, and hungry. It is possible that she was somewhat autistic, but a more functioning one. I ruled out Daisy killing her parents, because if you go to the scene where the policeman is talking to Tom, Martha's husband, about the fire, he says that they built it around a fairy ring. A fairy ring is a circle of mushrooms growing naturally from the ground...According to lore the circle could be a gateway to the fairy world. He said there was lots of gas spread around, and one of them could have tried to stop the other, and both getting caught on fire in the process. This makes sense, as the old man next door was telling Daisy's mother that her "real" baby was crying for her...So it seems to me, that she would have built the fire to kill Daisy, and her husband (if you notice in the film, he is more protective of his daughter than the mother), tried to stop her, so they both died in the fire and Daisy escaped. Daisy said during police questioning that the fire was, "hot, hot, hot..." Her way of repeating things most definitely fits autism, and in the olden days when people exhibited some kind of oddity or disability, they were outcasted by society. Even someone who had a bit more extra hair on their body or face than normal, was considered to possibly be a werewolf. Does Daisy have some kind of supernatural power? I don't think so...I think the film is a great depiction of how superstition and unchanging small towns can cause obsession and brainwashing...Basically all logic and rationale gets thrown out of the window, because it would make things easier...Even Tom admits to this, when he tells Martha he doesn't want Daisy to be a part of the family...He says he doesn't care if she's a fairy, autistic, or abused...It would just make things easier on them without society's pressure if they let Daisy go. I think Daisy removed the latch on the door because of the scene with her and Martha in the bathtub, but I don't believe that she deliberately drowned her brother. A lot of young children innocently try to smother their infant siblings...That doesn't make you a fairy. It makes you disturbed...Any child who isn't getting proper love from her parents or society and is made to live in a shed will of course be disturbed. What little girl hasn't called herself a "fairy" or a "princess"? Especially if the people around you accuse you of being it. The ending, however, is why I didn't give 5 stars...If you notice the last shot of Martha lying bloody on the bathroom floor, she is still breathing...You can distincly see her stomach going up and down...Was this simply overlooked during filming, or was she supposed to still be alive? Tom takes off with his newborn son from the room where Daisy had him wrapped up in his cradle on the bed, and we don't know what he does or where he goes...Perhaps the director meant for it to be that way, so that the mystery isn't completely solved by the audience...We get to experience what it really feels like to be surrounded by all that kind of paranoid superstition. I loved this movie. It is slow, but I love that aspect about European films...You get to really allow the story to saturate inside your mind and heart.

Not exactly the horror genre but I enjoyed it. A little off topic, but I enjoyed a glimpse of rural Ireland. Paranoia and prejudice are everywhere I suppose. One reviewer was correct, the package pic is misleading but I like surprises.

Slow and Ambiguous,
By
This review is from: Daisy Chain (DVD)
As many other reviewers have said, this movie was pretty slow. I actually spent a lot of it reading a book while still being able to keep up with the plot. However, its one redeeming quality was that the mystery surrounding the girl was interesting and so I actually watched the entire thing. I really wanted to know what was up with her. Well, this is is a spoiler, so those who are actually going to watch it should not read it:
You never learn a single thing about the girl or why she acts the way she does! In fact, no questions are really answered at all. You watch the entire movie, and a series of strange, mysterious events build up around the girl. Finally, one last strange thing occurs and the movie just ends. It was terribly frustrating and unsatisfying, making the hour and a half I spent watching the movie seem like waste. I suppose that what the movie's creators were going for was to leave people with the dilema of judging the girl to be either a victim or a monster, but the lack of explanation/conclusion really hurt the movie for me. Sure, some movies can have an ambiguous ending, but they at least give the audience some satisfaction and answer some questions before doing so. This one didn't do anything, it just ended. Also, as others have said, the lack of zombies (and scary monsters in general) as portrayed on the cover made me sad.

Deceptive Packaging,
This review is from: Daisy Chain (DVD)
At first I was a little startled to read the vehemently negative reviews of DAISY CHAIN, but then I looked at the DVD image again & thought about the title of the movie. Being male, the first thing that comes to mind reading the title is of a pornagraphic nature. As for the picture, it's sort of cool--but has nothing to do with the story. The reviewers were probably, without a doubt 40...er, that is...20 years younger than me. They were also probably expecting something very different too--and no doubt pretty darn disappointed with what they got.
What they got, as a sympathetic reviewer points out, is more an old-fashioned, and somewhat lyrical, English ghost (or, ghost-like) story with decidedly Gaelic roots. Well, actually it's a faery story that focuses on maternal issues & all sorts of conflicted "feelings" (and the boys crash down the exit door in their mad dash out of the theatre--or livingroom.) There is an increased mometum & tightening suspense from the movie's middle to its interesting conclusion. Smart direction of the young girl at the center of conflict highlights the sense of an unknown & multi-dimensional crisis she represents. She is not forced to rely soley on her own inner resouces to create the illusion. Hint: watch her lips. But my lips are sealed. Recommended for renting or purchasing for kids who'll probably like it even more. Sorry, guys... The Changeling

Daisy Chain is quite possibly the strangest *good* horror film I've seen in quite some time.
There's hardly any atmosphere (unless you consider cool winds blowing through Irish countrysides scary) and the storyline is barely interesting or suspenseful enough to get the job done but yet... Daisy Chain is actually a decent film with pretty good acting (especially from the child character playing the psychotic eerily quiet little girl). The little girl does a lot of terribly evil things using her imagination such as giving people diseases, causing skin to melt, making pregnant mothers feel VERY uneasy about their soon-to-be born babies, and other twisted things. Whenever the girl speaks, her choice of words are usually hard to logically comprehend from her family and neighbors, so she's known as a freak around town. One old man in particular who lives nearby knows for an absolute fact there's something seriously wrong with the girl, so any moments where he's on screen are really worth paying close attention to. There's not a whole lot of blood or extreme violence- the atmosphere is usually really quiet and slow-moving, but there's just something appealing about a little child tormenting others in horror films that feels delightfully twisted. So with THAT in mind, Daisy Chain deserves to be watched at least once. Plus seeing a horror movie take place in Ireland is pretty cool too.

Play With Me,

I don't understand why DAISY CHAIN has received such bad reviews. Granted, it's not a fast paced gore fest. But I found DAISY CHAIN to be very intriguing, lyrical and haunting.
Martha and Tomas have lost a baby, Chloe and now Martha is pregnant again. Understandably, Martha is very fragile mentally, so the couple have moved to the country to get away from the stress of living in London. While moving into their new home, Martha meets one of the neighborhood children, Daisy and it's apparent that something isn't quite right with the child. But is it autism or simply child abuse. Martha witnesses Daisy's grandfather hurl a rock at the child's head and later discovers the child lives in a shed away from the house. Everyone thinks that Daisy is a changeling, a fairy child that brings bad luck to everyone. And some are ready to kill her in order to remove the threat. The story is heartbreaking and Daisy is at once, menacing and haunting. How horrible would it be to be shunned by all and no one to answer your pleas of "Play with me". DAISY CHAIN is not without it's faults but, the ending is chilling. If you want a taste of something different, something that will tug at your heart while prickling the hair at the back of your neck, then settle in THE DAISY CHAIN

If you can appreciate something more subtle and slower-paced than the usual film classified under the horror genre, give this a watch. The atmosphere derives from life in a small Irish coastal village. The film centers around the question of whether an outcast young girl is merely a troubled child or is actually a malevolent supernatural being. Good acting, well-directed, lingers in your mind after viewing.

Well writen and directed folkloric triller.,
This review is from: The Daisy Chain (Amazon Instant Video)
I am quite surprised with some of the bad reviews, and disagree with them.
I immeasurably enjoyed this movie. It reminded me of some of the early British Hammer Films of the 1950's. Movies like these are refreshing to watch because many of today's movies (horror / trillers) are empty, with no intelligence, full of blood and gore, and sex... I Personally, can't stand those types of films, and will not wast my time or money watching them. So I highly recommend this particular film to those who feel the same as I. |
