I will name my next daughter for Daisy,
By A Customer
This review is from: Daisy and the Girl Scouts: The Story of Juliette Gordon Low (Hardcover)
I got into this book thinking, "What EVER." I was put on bed rest while gestating right after I had signed up to be a leader for GSUSA. My co-leader gave me a copy to read while literally sitting out the next three months until I had my son. I was suprised that I liked it so much! Juliette Gordon Lowe was hearing impared, and even though she lived at a time when handicaps were a real impairment, she used her lack of hearing to an advantage! She also dealt with courage her husband's alcoholic problems and, and showed herself to be a truely driven person. She was not ahead of her time-- she was a woman of her time, as women were just getting used to Queen Victoria's stifling influence being over with, and she was there to teach the new generation of girls what living was all about. I found myself not wanting to put the book down and I would tell my daughters stories of what I read for months after I read this!

I have read several books about Juliette Low, founder of the Girl Scouts. My daughter, who at the time was a Junior Girl Scout in 4th grade, chose Juliette Low as the subject for her school boigraphy assignment. I was SO lucky to find this book for her to read! It is very interesting, written for the older child - not babyish like some other books are. It is long enough to qualify as an acceptable book to use for a report - approximately 100 pages. It tells about Daisy's entire life, not just about when she formed the Girl Scouts. Although it can be confusing trying to keep track of all the names of Daisy's relatives, it's a terrific book for children 3rd grade and up (but I enjoyed reading it, too!)

We picked this book for my daughter's book report based on reviews we had read. She is a strong 4th grade reader, but found this book difficult to follow. I read portions of the book with my daughter in mind. I found it contained long descriptive sentences, and did not flow well. I would not recommend this book for report purposes for the younger readers in this age group. We will try to read it for pleasure after the report is completed.

]Very good biography It does not make Daisy a "plaster saint" which she certainly wasn't. It touches on her problems, which shows the girls that you can have a disability and still have a successful fulfilled life if you look for the areas where your strengths and in her case some "deficits" can serve others. Having grown up with some similar "deficits" with no one to understand or address the problems I know what she had to go through. I personally feel It was these "deficits" that helped her to be able get the GS movement up and running. The book is inspirational without being obvious it is a good read for Brownies and Juniors and perhaps even Cadettes. The stories are presented simply and therefore although you see a delightful character, with some eccentricities you also see a person with a mission that she strongly believes in and how she has given each one of us this gift to enrich our own personal lives 100 years later. I bought this book because my daughter had to be a character in a book and this fit perfectly. It has a lot of information and it is a biography (kid version) on Juliette Gordon Low.
