Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Daisy Jane loves playing with her favorite babysitter, Allie, and one of her favorite games is Brides, a make-believe wedding with Daisy cast as bride or flower girl and her cat as the groom. All that practice stands her in good stead when Allie asks Daisy to be the flower girl in her real wedding. After shopping for the perfect dress and practicing how to march "slow as ketchup," Daisy joins in a wedding and reception that are full of surprises. McDonald's genial narrative, good pacing, and precise wording give this entry in the Step into Reading series the edge over more mundane books for young readers. In the illustrations, rounded forms and warm colors give the pages an inviting look. Though the day doesn't go exactly as planned, the book is just right for the many little girls who are enchanted by weddings and enamored by the very idea of dressing up and walking down the aisle. 10 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT ME

10. The first book I ever wrote was about a hermit crab, inspired by a pet I once owned.

9. My favorite color is purple.

8. I love to read mysteries. When I was Judy's age, I read all 56 classic Nancy Drew books . . . in order! Jeepers!

7. I used to collect scabs so I could examine them under the microscope that I got for my 8th birthday.

6. My four sisters and I often made up our own language, which included the words "Hoidi Boidi", "oogey", "retzel crummypuss" and "poony-poony".

5. My favorite TV show is JEOPARDY!

4. To research my Sisters Club book, THE RULE OF THREE, I toured San Francisco in search of the ultimate cupcake. The winner: Sleepless in San Francisco. Think chocolate + coffee.

3. When I was a kid, I fell down a hill from chasing the ice-cream truck and had to get stitches.

2. When I was a librarian, I used to tell stories in sign language. That's how I got the expression "same-same" for Judy.

1. I share a birthday (February 28) with a famous princess, race car driver and gangster, a Rolling Stone, a French tightrope walker, and a winning racehorse named Smarty Jones.

Daisy Jane loved it when her "best babysitter" Allie came over. She was lots of fun to play with. They played all kinds of games like Superheroes, Princesses, and, best of all, Brides. Sometimes she was the bride and other times she played the flower girl. Her black cat, Mr. Moon, was always the groom. She got all dressed up from head to toe and even had a basket of paper flowers. On the top of her head she had "an old curtain for her veil" and on her feet she had on "Allie's pink shoes." It was lots of fun, but there was no real wedding, but one day she got a surprise. Allie was really going to get married and Daisy Jane was going to be the flower girl!

It was so exciting. "Weddings were even better than kittens!" Of course Allie would have to find someone other than a cat like Mr. Moon to marry, but she assured Daisy Jane that she had one and would love him, "even when he has chicken pox." There were lots of things to do before the wedding and Allie talked about many of the things she would have at her wedding, including finger sandwiches and fireworks. Just before the wedding Daisy Jane would have to shop for her dress. The big day was soon coming, but there was an unusual occurrence at the wedding and everything went crazy. Would Daisy be able to save the day?

This is a great little story every little flower girl and prospective bride is just going to love! The imaginative and delightful Daisy Jane is an easy character to fall in love with. This is a level three, "Step Into Reading" book that is geared toward the more confident reader. It is divided into short chapters with and "easy to follow" plot. If you're looking for beginning chick lit, this is just perfect!

These are the cutest books for a flower girl! I think reading is so important so these are perfect. They may have to be read by an adult, but what little girl doesn't love to be read to. The illustrations are bright and fun! I also got the Pinkalicious Flower girl and Junie B. Jones Almost a Flower girl books as well as the Barbie Flower 'N Flutter doll for the flower girl bags.

The flower girl in my wedding is in 2nd grade and is a big fan of Daisy Jane books. She was so excited to have a flower girl book that she could read on her own!
