4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the price, September 11, 2010

First, I am very pleased that there are so many choices out there now for little girls who want to play guitar. Daisy Rock and Luna are two fine companies with a real commitment to what they are doing, and it shows in their products. That said, this guitar has a four and not a three star rating because what you get, if it all works, is definitely worth $187.

- The guitar itself is of good quality, a real guitar and not a toy. I was expecting something with no deal-breaker flaws and that is what I got. Pick up is good, wood is nice although they used wood filler for a tiny knothole in the head, action is okay, notes are reasonably well-articulated over the entire fretboard. Two pegs for the strap are installed. The body finish/color is really very good (spark-ah-LEE as I am sure my niece will say when she sees it), black lacquer finish was chipped on the head, and there are some quality issues with the finish there. This is their "short scale" model, which means they shorten the length from the body to the head by removing sections from a normal length fretboard. Otherwise the neck seems to me to be the same width as any electric guitar. The fret distance seems standard to me for an acoustic guitar, which means the frets are closer together than in a regular electric, makes it easier to play. Electric guitars are also easier to play anyway since they have lighter action. It weighs about 8 pounds, so I would not get this for anyone too small to manage that weight. Only real complaint is the volume knob is poorly calibrated. Turning it a fraction increases the volume way out of proportion to the turn, making it hard to control. I would tape (or maybe even glue) the volume knob in place about a quarter of the way around and use the amp for volume control.

- The amplifier works fine. It could do without the drive button, but the bass, treble and volume knobs work, that was my main concern. Most amplifiers this size come with the option of powering with batteries, this one does not. FYI, it comes with a cable which is not clear in the description so don't waste money on one as I did.

- The electronic tuner did not work, hopefully a fluke. The indicators in the screen appeared, but the input from the instrument to the tuner was not reflected by movement in the indicators and the LED lights never lit up. So the meter did not respond to the strings being played in auto or manual mode, regardless of how high or low the volume on the guitar was set. Changing the batteries, checking the connections, trying a different cord, etc. made no difference. Be sure you check this out before you turn the present over. Being able to tune the guitar is pretty important. I will update this review with how the company responds to the problem, in the meantime their offices are closed and the birthday is soon, so I will have to buy something.

- The DVD is somewhat helpful, apparently there is a book that is supposed to accompany it, not included. Janet Robin leads the instruction. In part 1 she gives a good orientation to the guitar, and an acceptable intro to technique, which is helpful. It is NOT an electric guitar intro, though. It is an acoustic guitar intro. The info applies to an electric, it just does not highlight the functionality of an electric. Most kids will easily master what is in part 1. In part 2 she explains how to read music, which IMO was a waste, since it is not done in a way that will actually teach much. First, there is way too much information, briefly touched on. Second, the info is stated, but not taught. There is a difference. Better illustration of the basics, better quality examples and better quality practice exercises would have been a good way to use that time and space (do little girls who want to play ASAP really need to know the history of the g clef?) She gives a brief explanation for reading guitar tabs, but the exercises are not helpful because the tab for the music you are supposed to play along with is not displayed. There is not a single cool tune (we're talking the "Beautiful Brown Eyes" genre which I hated even as a kid 45 years ago).

- The case is black, not lavender as many photos illustrate.

- Get a set of strings for back up, the ones it comes with are not very good, which is to be expected. However, they are expertly wound around the tuning pegs and the guitar tuned up with no problem (this is often done sloppily, it was nice to not have to redo the stringing)

Bottom line, for the price and if the tuner works, this is a great deal and a great present for a little girl from about 8 to 12 years old. It is visually exciting enough to make her want to learn to play it, and good enough quality so that she will not get discouraged when she tries. The DVD gives enough information to get them going. I would definitely buy it again.

This is my daughters first electric guitar. Its quite heavy...but she loves it. Dont know if all electric guitars are this heavy - we only had a childs acoustic before. Its very sparkly! Once I got it tuned for her she started playing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality control, January 1, 2012

I purchased this package as a Christmas gift for my 10 year old. Unfortunately I am returning it to Amazon and starting over.

The DVD can't be read because there is a flaw in the media surface. The tuner simply does not work. It turns on, but does not pick up any sound. The quality of the amp is very poor. The final insult was the chipped paint. It looks like the volume control knob was installed while the paint was still wet, because the paint was chipped away all around the volume control on the front of the guitar.

The guitar itself is a nice instrument. We had a musician friend give it a run through on a better amp and it sounded lovely.

BUT, this was a gift for my 10 year old who really wants to learn to play guitar. All the broken stuff in a brand new box was just too much to take. She ended up crying in frustration because she couldn't tune the guitar or watch the DVD. I realize that the paint is a cosmetic issue, but for my 10 year old, it was the final straw. Her sparkly pink new guitar had an ugly patch of missing paint.

I've already found a better quality amp (with the help of the musician friend) and am looking for a different guitar. I am still considering a replacement by Daisy Rock. The guitar itself was a really nice instrument. But, I'm not going to replace the package. The accessories were such poor quality that I decided to return the whole package.
