I have used this reel for several weeks and it has performed flawlessly. Reel is very simple to use and setup and I got use to it very quickly. I put 12lb test line on the reel and due to its size the reel fits well in my hand and the reach to stop the reel with my thumb seems shorter than other reels I own so I have had very few backlashes. The spool seems to be wider and very accessible so the few backlashes I have had were very easy to clear. Reviews on other sites said that this reel was noisey. I haven't had that problem. I recommend this reel for beginner to aveage baitcasting users.

I love this reel. I typically buy mid-price bait casters and expect them to last 2 years of moderately heavy fishing.

This reel appears rugged, casts very smoothly and adjusts to casting efficiently without a problem. The handle seems a bit over-sized, which is a bonus. The retrieve is fast enough to "rip" spinner baits.

This is my first Diawa, I will be buying more in the future.

I live in Japan and this reel is quite good for this price range.
But, gears are noisy and not so comfortable as ABU black max which is almost
same price. And also a casting distance is much shorter than black max,
provably because of difference of the weight of the spool and preciseness of the compornent. Black max is far more smooth.
So, at this price range, I recommend a black max, then this one.
Actually, this reel is pretty easy to hundle and fun to use. Easyness is one good thing about this reel.
Don't buy Simano at this price range, as they are very weak in body construction.
Higher price Simano like Crud is very fine reel.

My criteria for choosing fishing reels: smooth reeling, smooth casting, forgiving settings, quality performance, reasonable price. At the same time I purchased the Laguna, I bought the Okuma Calera. While the Okuma performed well, the Laguna was significatnly smoother and more forgiving (didn't have to adjust the settings when changing lures).

Not only is the Diawa Laguna a great reel for the price, it's a GREAT fishing reel. The Laguna out-performed my Shimao Curado, Shimano Calcutta, Okum Calera, and several others. If you like the price of this reel, you will love its performance.

This reel is light weight and very smooth in operation. Seem's to be well made, feels like a reel that should cost alot more. Very satisfied I think Daiwa has a winner in this reel.

Nice smooth reel, casts well, can get backlash if not set correct, fast retrive. So far so good. Would buy another for a back up reel.

This is a very nice reel for the money. It does need to be oiled before you use it the first time but once you do that it is awesome. The only reason i am giving it four star instead of five is because the description stated free spare aluminum spool which it did not come with. Was looking forward to having that spool so that i could have mono and braid ready to go with only one rod. The extra spool is why i chose it over the abu garcia silver max. All in all happy and would recommend. Dam that spool lol..........
