4.0 out of 5 stars A second purchase...
Having used this model reel for over ten years, I ordered a replacement. Very smooth operation, adequate capacity, with all the features we enjoy. Hoping this purchase (made in China) lasts as long as my previous one which was produced in Japan by Daiwa. Excellent reel for light line and lure presentations.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the Daiwa Quality I was Expecting
First, I love underspin reels, they are a great alternative to spinning reels. With that said, these are not quality reels.

I purchased one of these in each size to replace my spinning reels. I made the incorrect assumption that Daiwa had modified the well made goldcast series for trigger release. However, the fact that these reels cost 1/3 of the...

This review is from: Daiwa Underspin-XD Series, Trigger-Control Closed-Face Reel (Sports)
First, I love underspin reels, they are a great alternative to spinning reels. With that said, these are not quality reels.

I purchased one of these in each size to replace my spinning reels. I made the incorrect assumption that Daiwa had modified the well made goldcast series for trigger release. However, the fact that these reels cost 1/3 of the goldcast series should have been a clue. The XD120 lasted for maybe 30 casts before the trigger release failed and would only allow 5 yard casts. The XD80 is still working for now. The XD40 has an unusual drag adjustment that sits in the opening of the reel. This has tangled the line more than once when the tension on the line is lost. Although, I have used the XD40 more than any of the others and is at least still working. Bottom line, you get what you pay for.
