1.0 out of 5 stars Completely unreliable
Product is billed as having 600' range--range is actually less than 100' and does not work well through walls. Motion detection area is very narrow and not consistent. Well-conceived but poorly executed product. Tried to find a way to give it 0 stars, but system doesn't allow it.

I first bought this product in March of 09. It immediately became useful when I caught a creep entering my property at night on night after the alert went off. (See [...] ) You can see when the light come on, he runs. This was two weeks after getting my alert. Then once again a year later I caught a second creep in action. ( [...] ) The unit worked for just over a year before it quit working. I sent it back knowing it was just out of warrantee, but the people at dakota honored it anyway and sent me a new one. During the time the unit was out for repair, my wife and I realized how much we missed the unit. Not just the fact that we couldn't tell when someone had come into our driveway but how unprotected we felt at night. So I bought a second receiver. We have 4 transmitters on the property. One at the back gate, one on our rear deck, one near our garage door entrance and one at the driveway. Each zone has its own tone. Now with our repaired receiver in our laundry room and the new receiver in our bedroom, we sleep well at night. Unless the unit goes off : o )

I would add that the transmitters and receivers work flawlessly together. When it goes off, something is up. Dogs and dear will set it off, so that can be a problem, but overall we love ours. Batteries in the transmitter last about a year. Our temps in central Oregon range from 10 below in the winter and 100 in the summer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great, June 7, 2010

We added a second receiver to put in the pool house, out back by the pool. It's very secluded, so we have trouble knowing if someone comes in the drive when we're back there. So far, this works great! Haven't had any false signals, and it is very reliable. We have the magnetic bar buried by the driveway as well as a motion detector mounted on a tree by the drive. It's probably about 75 feet out to the pool area, and I can't fault any part of this system. It all works great!

I have a very long driveway. I am using this device in conjunction with the driveway probe transmitter. I bought one of those orange rotating 12 volt lights to connect to the reciever unit inside the house. I am planning on connecting this to the 12 Volt output. The manual says that it will run for 10 minutes. So I should not miss any alarms. If I have the music up real high or for some other reason that I am out of range of the audio alarm the visual alarm will last for 10 minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars I now have owned this product for nearly 4 years, December 2, 2011
This review is from: Dakota Alert Extra Wireless Receiver (Electronics)
I now have owned this product for nearly 4 years. I was sure this product would stop working or be miss firing false motion alerts. But it has not the product lived up to its name. False motion alerts are about 1 in 200 alerts. Missed motion alerts are 1 in 35 mostly at night with black cars. I have 2 detectors outside running fine with 9volt lithium batteries that have not been changed. Inside the receiver speakers has been replaced but the system as a whole is really impressively solid.

MY ELDERLY DAD HAD A HARDWIRED ALARM THAT GOT HIT BY LIGHTENING AND PRONOUNCED DEAD. HE WAS LOOKING FOR AN AFFORDABLE REPLACEMENT. THIS WAS IT! EASY TO INSTALL. IT TOOK NO TIME AT ALL. WORKS GREAT. HE ACTUALLY PUT THE TRANSMITTER IN HIS GARAGE AND IT WORKED!! SO IT'S OUT OF THE WEATHER AND DOES EVERYTHING HIS EXPENSIVE HARD-WIRED ONE DID EQUALLY WELL. THE VOLUME IS ADJUSTABLE AND VERY LOUD SO IT'S PERFECT FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIFFICULTY HEARING OR DO NOT HAVE THEIR HEARING AIDS IN (LIKE DURING THE NIGHT). HE FELLS A LOT SAFER NOW THAT HE HAS AN ALARM AGAIN. THESE SYSTEMS ARE GREAT. NO FALSE ALARMS FROM ANIMALS OR WEATHER!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have better audio performance, June 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dakota Alert Extra Wireless Receiver (Electronics)
I purchased a Dakota Alert receiver last year which has a very good audio annuciator performance at nearly all volume levels. I've tried two more of the receivers in the past few months and both have good audio performance only at low volume. The sound at higher volumes is poor. There is a need to re-engineer the audio sounder (or annunicator).

2.0 out of 5 stars They don't work., February 13, 2011

On my second one and it stopped working again. The first one worked great for a while and when it stopped I exchanged it for a new one. This one worked for a while and now has also fails to detect vehicles that pass in front of it. I have the sensor mounted only 20 feet from the house so it should work fine. Tried moving the sensor and new batteries. Nothing worked.

My husband owns a used car lot and does minor repairs and clean ups. This device allows him to work in the garage and be alerted to potential customers driving onto the lot. For me, it adds a safety feature when he is out of town as our home and business are located on the same property. The device is worth the money and it was delivered promptly.
