5.0 out of 5 stars Using this to monitor a hallway..., June 5, 2011

This review is from: Dakota Alert Wireless PIR Sensor Kit (Electronics)
I am taking care of an elderly relative and need to know when she wakes up in the morning. Although a little pricey, this Dakota Alert kit is exactly what I needed. First off, the sensor is battery powered and can be placed anywhere. (Don't know how long the batteries will last, but the manual says 6 to 12 months.) I set it on the corner of desk in the hall. You can turn off the red light so it is not a distraction and doesn't surprise anyone by blinking. The monitor needs to be plugged in but that isn't a problem because I keep it by my chair. What I really like is the monitor has a volume control. Unlike the cheaper motion sensor systems that have very loud, scary, alarms, I can turn down the volume to a quiet level. You can choose from four alarms...I like the stanza from Beethoven's Fur Elise as a gentle notification alarm. To configure the system, you may need to open the sensor and monitor cases to set little switches inside each. Following the diagrams in the manual, I had no problem with this. This system is exactly what I needed. I would recommend it to anyone that wants a motion "notification" system rather than a full blown perimeter alarm system...although it can be used for that too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised, May 27, 2009
This review is from: Dakota Alert Wireless PIR Sensor Kit (Electronics)
Works well, currently using inside a church to indicate members using side dorr. Receiver in office at least 400' away working fine. Easy to install, very versitile options. No unneeded options you pay for. My only dislike is of the 4 sound options they are all annoying. the only one acceptable sounds exactly like our outside door bell.

5.0 out of 5 stars great for security, December 13, 2011

we bought this for a detatched garage that sits 200' from the house. works great, anytime someone enters the garage, the receiver in the house goes off. we turn the receiver off during the day and on at night. now we'll know if anyone ever enters the garage. the battery in the sensor has lasted at least 2 years. great investment for piece of mind.

4.0 out of 5 stars A reliable system needing improvements, August 30, 2011

This review is from: Dakota Alert Wireless PIR Sensor Kit (Electronics)
I purchased and install the system which has a great range. However, improvements are needed to make the sensor housing more robust for outdoor use. The sensor's plastic housing has virtually no protection from the elements and I used electrical plastic tape to seal the seams of the sensor to prevent moisture entry. Yes, I am aware of the improved housing and the "bird house" you can buy to protect the sensor but at extra cost. A better designed plastic housing would obviate such cheesy additions. Also, the set up is straight forward for one who is electronically savvy but for those who can't tell the difference between a dip switch and a jumper this could be challenging. So far the unit works well and the adjustable alarm has plenty of volume.

4.0 out of 5 stars LOW TRANSMITTING POWER, December 21, 2011

This review is from: Dakota Alert Wireless PIR Sensor Kit (Electronics)

I have a brick house. I had to locate the wireless reciver unit by a window facing the wireless sensor because the wireless sensor did not have enough output power to transmit through the brick walls of my house. But the alarm was loud enough to be heard on the second floor of my home, so no problem. To be honest I don't want high power EMF waves around me. I've only had the unit two weeks but it works fine. You will have to weather proof the sensor unit if it is exposed to the elements.
