Book Description

September 24, 2002
From the author of the acclaimed debut novel Dark, a searing and authentic new novel about the mano a mano feud between a famous rap artist and an intrepid, won’t-back-down hip-hop journalist.

Dakota Grand is a young music journalist who’s left his Southern roots behind and moved to the Big Apple to cover the rough-and-tumble world of rap. He’s part of the star-making machinery, spinning the web of interviews, reviews, and “inside stories” that move the CD’s off the racks. He’s good at this, but what it’s gotten him so far is an apartment in deepest Brooklyn, a check-to-check freelancer’s existence, and a hit-and-run love life. Then the break of his career comes: the opportunity to interview one of his rap heroes, Mirage, one half of the legendary group Arbor Day, for a cover story for The Magazine. Puffing on a spliff, Mirage spills plenty of beans to Dakota Grand, but he’s less than pleased by the resulting article. In fact, he has his boys assault Dakota in a midtown elevator and send him to the hospital. What ensues is an increasingly tense and violent duel between Mirage and Dakota Grand, with the young writer determined to fight back for his own honor and that of his fellow journalists.

As gripping as the best “Behind the Music” episode, Dakota Grand is a vivid and provocative study of a young writer and the multiplatinum, chart-topping culture that has begun to consume him--a significant step forward for a rising young star in the African-American literary world.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This sophomore effort by Jasper, a music journalist, is an unsettling novel with a ripped-from-the-headlines plot. Dakota Grand is a New York City music writer seeking fame and fortune by chronicling the unruly antics of rappers, hip-hop promoters and music industry hangers-on. As he soon discovers, the life of a scribe in "the business" involves more than just scoring backstage passes, attending listening parties and rehashing press releases: double-dealing, deception and danger are part of the job description. When Dakota lands a prized interview with Mirage, half of his favorite rap duo, Arbor Day, he senses a chance to turn the twosome's tumultuous story into an article that will make him the envy of the other hustling music writers. His plan backfires when the spliff-smoking entertainer decides the published piece is not to his liking and assaults Grand. Jasper, a veteran observer of the hip-hop scene, has an unfailing ability to recreate its glitzy locales, hip dialogue, slick characters and heart-pounding excitement. After the beating, a battered Grand rejects a bribe from the rapper's lawyer, and vows to get revenge on Mirage. An interview with a big city reporter, which Grand thinks will even the score, backfires when his words are twisted and his life and career are put in jeopardy. What happens when a writer becomes a part of the story? What happens when he loses his moral compass and becomes the evil he is writing about? Jasper addresses these questions in a blood-drenched conclusion that seems to mimic the macho lyrics of a gangsta rap rant. Despite an occasional misstep, this is an impressive second novel loaded with strong characterizations and telling insights into hip-hop culture.

From Booklist

Dakota Grand is the nom de plume of the hip-hop journalist at the center of this novel. Dakota gets the chance of a lifetime to write a cover article for The Magazine, about the rap group Arbor Day. Dakota interviews the group's estranged leader, Mirage, and starts to work on the article, which he hopes will change his life. He is also beginning to tire of all the partying and dating games and wants to be accepted as a serious writer. Dakota's luck continues when he meets the woman of his dreams and has a publishing house make an offer on his first novel, but then things begin to unravel. Mirage is furious when he reads the article and has his bodyguards attack Dakota. Dakota plans revenge but begins to question whether continuing the cycle of violence is really the right thing to do. Jasper's sophomore effort, following Dark (2001), may not be a literary tour de force, but it should be commended for both its differences and similarities to works by forerunners Iceberg Slim and Walter Mosley. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Grand Second Book, September 26, 2002

This review is from: Dakota Grand: A Novel (Paperback)
Kenji Jasper takes the reader for a very detailed entertaining ride through the world of hip-hop and its crazy characters. It's so vividly detailed and realistic that it makes the reader wonder if in fact the author has had his own drama with an unnamed rapper.
Dakota Grand is a very well developed character. He has so many layers and you can really feel his pain as a hustling freelance writer in New York.
Hip-hop and some of the artist in the genre are out of control these days and this book captures very well, the drama and what goes down when the cameras are not rolling. It's topical because of everything that's going down in music and very well written.
If you want to check something out that's not totally driven by a romantic relationship that really puts your imagination to work, this is a great book to check out. I especially recommend it for brothas who are having a hard time finding fiction that they can relate to.

2.0 out of 5 stars A major disappointment, October 18, 2002
This review is from: Dakota Grand: A Novel (Paperback)
...The story basically concerns the eponymous Dakota Grand a hip-hop journalist living and working in NYC although he is originally from Atlanta,Dakota is making a living writing pieces for various magazines until he gets the biggest break of his career an interview with his childhood rap idol Mirage of the rap duo Arbor Day,Mirage is making his first solo record and during the interview he tells Dakota the real reasons while the group split up.But when the interview is in print Mirage ambushes Dakota and puts him in the hospital, this being the 3rd such attack that hip-hop journos have suffered makes Dakota mad and he swears revenge against Mirage.
The NY hip-hop scene is well fleshed out and Kenji Jaspers knowledge of the scene comes out well as the group of characters who know each other from the rounds of album launches and parties are engaing and well written, including Carolina the sassy Cuban girl he meets on a train and subsequently falls in love with.
What lets this book down badly is the ending as i have said Dakotas 'revenge'mission on Mirage and its consequences all this is resolved in 10 pages and is sothinly plotted and written it takes your breath away, its as though the author was on a tight deadline and ran out of time or could'nt be bothered to finish the story properly or even had given the publishers the wrong draft of the novel a major waste of reading time and a lazy way to finish what could have been a great story.

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't like this one., March 29, 2006

Dakota writes a story about a rapper in a magazine, the rapper doesn't like it, gets revenge on him and then vice versa. While I liked the author's first book, Dark, I didn't like this one at all, I didn't like the main character Dakota.
