Book Description

The Dakota people, alternatively referred to as Sioux Native Americans or Oceti Sakowin (The People of the Seven Council Fires), have a storied history that extends to a time well before the arrival of European settlers. This work offers a comprehensive history of the Dakota people and is largely based on eyewitness accounts from the Dakota themselves, including legends, traditions, and winter counts. Included are detailed analyses of the various divisions (tribes and bands) of the Dakota people, including the Lakota and Nakota tribes. Topics explored include the Dakotas' early government, the role of women within the Dakota tribes, the rituals and rites of the Dakota people, and the influence of the white man in destroying Dakotan culture.

This review is from: The Dakota Peoples: A History of the Dakota, Lakota and Nakota Through 1863 (Hardcover)
This book chronicles the history of the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota peoples from migration and settlement to 1863. The chapters on women's roles and the influences of whites are especially enlightening as Palmer details specific variables for the reader. Because the history of the Siouxan peoples is a carefully kept oral tradition, this book becomes all the more valuable to non-indigenous peoples for its written compilations. The areas of the book explaining tribal divisions and settlement are something I have never seen addressed with such vivid detail before. I am a Historian with special emphasis on Plains tribes.
