When the day came to gut 17 pumpkins, this tool worked extremely well. I highly recommend searching for the useful video on Youtube which explains how best to use this tool. In a nutshell, it helps to work as a team of two, with one person turning and holding the pumpkin and the other operating the drill. Practice helps greatly-- you will be an expert after three or four pumpkins, but the first one will seem awkward. Also, we found that using a corded electric drill is far more effective than using a cordless drill-- the corded drills tend to weigh less, have a lot more power, and reach higher RPMs.
There is a flaw with the pumpkin gutter, which is that the shaft is round, whereas a hexagonal shape (even just at the chuck end) would make it a lot easier to chuck tightly into the drill. It has a tendency to eventually slide out of the drill; you'll want to tighten the chuck very firmly.
The best part is that you can really thin the walls of a pumpkin-- to as little as a half inch. This can result in some great effects, like an unperforated pumpkin that glows in the dark.
Bonus: As advertised, it doesn't destroy the pumpkin seeds.
It did take a little bit of getting used to, and a little trial and error to figure out the best way to use it. The first pumpkin took me 7-8 minutes, but once I got the hang of it, things started to go very quick, and each pumpkin only took a few minutes to completely gut. I made two passes on each pumpkin. One very quick one (30 seconds) to take care of the bulk of the strings and goo, and then, after dumping all of that out, another slightly more careful pass to take care of anything I missed. The Pumpkin Gutter did a better, more thorough job than I could ever do with just a scraper or a spoon, and it did it in a fraction of the time. In previous years, I could only do a dozen or so Jack-o'-lanterns, because gutting them was such a lengthy and monotonous process. Even just that many took me forever. This year I was able to single-handedly gut nearly 30 pumpkins in barely 2 hours, and it was was so super quick and easy that I plan to do even more next year! It was also actually less messy than gutting the old fashioned way. All of the mess pretty much stays inside the pumpkin while you're working with it, and then it's as simple as dumping it out into a trash can. There was almost no clean up needed afterward.
I'd recommend this product to anyone who plans to carve more than a few pumpkins, and if you do 5+, this is a MUST HAVE. Gutting by hand isn't so bad if you're only doing a few, and it can even be part of the fun.Read more ›

Works well, just be careful you don't put a hole through your pumpkin. A bit of a pain to clean with all the pumpkin wrapped around the blades.Published 14 hours ago by Dan Schmidt

It's not eliminating any dirty work, but it definitely speeds up the process which is great. You will still be scraping the pumpkin and getting the seeds out of course.Published 1 month ago by A Haunter
