Found this as a cassett at a flea market...I collect jazz/blues and this was a special find. Great arrangements, great players (houston Person on sax)and she can get down and sing the blues. this session really swings. Highly reccomended!!

Although this album by Dakota Staton on Muse records was recorded in 1990 she still sounds like she is in her prime. Of course the orchestration with great musicians Houston Person on the sax, Bross Townsend on the piano, Fred Hunter on the Bass and Paula Hampton on the drums, makes you feel like you are sitting in on a jam session at a jazz club.

Opening strong and gutsy on "Countryman" and followed by "Mean To Me" and her bluesy interpretation of "The Thrill is Gone, is just the beginning of this 12 track CD (last two tracks bonus). Other songs include: "This Bitter earth", "C.C. Rider", "Jim", "That's No Joke (one of my personal favorites), "Body and Soul", "Stop Doin' For Her", the playful "I Did Everything Right With The Wrong Man", "I'm Tired of That", and closing with "Cherokee."

The liner notes are interesting and provide some background information as to what Dakota was during this period.

By this point of her career Dakota's voice was tougher, grittier, and bluesier than her early recordings such as "The Late, Late Show", however it is a great example of how a true artists expands, explores and develops. Even though she recorded some of these songs before, they all sound different on this album/cd. I was lucky enough to see her perform live after her stroke, and despite her vision being impaired, she sounded strong and had a personality that would knock you out. This is a wonderful cd with some hidden gems recorded by the late Dakota Staton, who had style class, and a voice to write home about!!! She should never be forgotten.
