This one, however, is disappointing. I am using it some, and it has MANY features that could be useful. It is not made very well. The plastic is not nearly as heavy duty as my other one, so I don't think it will last very long. Each time I use the cucumber slicer, I have to get out my pliers and put one of the blades back into place. It has some very good ideas in the engineering, and Genius would do us all a favor if they made it slightly bigger, heavier plastic, better construction, etc. I love that it all stores in it's own box, and that it has it's own cover which you can put over the "holding container" where the vegies go. When I do use it, I don't "whack" nearly as hard as I do with my bigger one, and I won't try to do really dense things like carrots with it.
I am actually using it's grater every day now, for lemon rinds (which I am now adding to all my salads, etc.). It began to rust under it's edges the first time I washed it, but that part does not touch any food, and the grate-size is just perfect for lemon rinds.
I will keep it (at least until I get completely fed up because I have very little space). It certainly is not a replacement for the better one.
First of all, you have to cut the items to be chopped into a size that will fit on the grid you're using. That grid has to be on placed at the back of the unit below the upper grid with the button that is used afterward to dislodge any particles that got stuck up there. Cutting the items to fit within the grid has never been a problem for me as I don't have to be precise, just make sure they don't extend beyond the grid blade or you won't get a clean cut.
Second, place things like green pepper or celery skin side up to get the cleanest cut. Third, you want to use a sort of mini karate chop motion when lowering the lid to make a cut. I always get a clean cut the first time. Pressing it gently and firmly won't work. You have to sort of whack it down. That may be too aggressive for a man, but I'm pretty strong and have used this thing hundreds and hundreds of times with nothing breaking or cracking.
The wedge tool works better that I expected. I use it mostly for small tomatoes, but it works for lemons and limes too. Cherry tomatoes do best on the grids. Larger tomatoes have to be a bit firm. Very ripe ones are too soft and juicy to chop well.Read more ›

This "Nicer Dicer" is pretty, but that's about it. I couldn't cut a Onion with out putting my whole body weight down on the lid.Published 4 days ago by Linda McDaniel
