The Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of the TIbetan people. He lives in exile in Dharamsala, India. He was awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1989. He is the author of many books on Buddhism including The Four Noble Truths.

His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was born in 1935 to a peasant family in northeastern Tibet and was recognized at the age of two as the reincarnation of his predecessor, the Thirteenth Dalai Lama. The world's foremost Buddhist leader, he travels extensively, speaking eloquently in favor of ecumenical understanding, kindness and compassion, respect for the environment, and, above all, world peace.

In this small{literally] book, HH Dalai lama speaks of compassion,ridding oneself of anger,forgiveness of enemies,living life in a truly more loving way. Though much of it seems familar to western ears[the ideas of love compassion and service are not unknown in western religion and philosophy],the simplicity of much of what the dalai lama says is striking. His own struggles with anger are enlightening,and the prose,gleaned from lectures I believe, is smooth and cleanly transformed into english.There are other books of the dalai lama that are far more demanding{"tranforming the mind" for example},though few are more accesible. A lovely gift,a wonderful introduction to one of the masters of the day.

Then, put it in your desk drawer at work, beside your bed, on a coffee table, or in your glove compartment where you can easily find it when you are tempted to deal harshly with other fallible human beings.

I read this book daily. Easy to use, portable, and full of helpful insights. Always helps me put things in the right perspective. I give this as gifts just because I love this book so much!
