2.0 out of 5 stars Teaser book for the Power of Compassion
This litle book of wisdom is a compilation of extracts from the "Power of Compassion". I give it a 3 stars because I thought it was a compilation of selected sayings from all the books and/or interviews. However, every Dalai Lama's book to me is a precious fountain of wisdom and I love all of them but I am just dissapointed with this one in terms of publication.

In this small{literally] book, HH Dalai lama speaks of compassion, ridding oneself of anger, forgiveness of enemies, living life in a truly more loving way. Though much of it seems familar to western ears[the ideas of love compassion and service are not unknown in western religion and philosophy],the simplicity of much of what the dalai lama says is striking. His own struggles with anger are enlightening, and the prose, gleaned from lectures I believe, is smooth and cleanly transformed into english. There are other books of the dalai lama that are far more demanding{"tranforming the mind" for example},though few are more accesible. A lovely gift,a wonderful introduction to one of the masters of the day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, March 5, 2002
This review is from: The Dalai Lama's Book of Wisdom (Paperback)
In this pocket-size text, His Holiness the XIV Dali Lama offers simple but profound counsel to those who wish to change their lives for the better. Buy it. Read it. Then, put it in your desk drawer at work, beside your bed, on a coffee table, or in your glove compartment where you can easily find it when you are tempted to deal harshly with other fallible human beings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Accessible..., October 28, 2000
This review is from: The Dalai Lama's Book of Wisdom (Paperback)
This is not so much a book as an aide to meditation and reflection.

If you are learning about Buddhism, and therefore about meditation, this book is very useful. I keep mine by my meditation table (with candle, incense, little Buddha statue and a small saying). Before meditating, I open the book randomly and reflect upon the statement made by HH Dalai Lama, as I ease inwardly.

Highly recommended for yourself, or as a gift for a friend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple advice, December 1, 2001

Inspirational words form one of the leading spiritual figures of our time. The Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet, offers simple advice to those who want to bring more compassion into their lives. I also highly recommend "Open Your Mind, Open Your Life: A Little Book of Eastern Wisdom" by Taro Gold.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pocket Wisdom, August 27, 2010
This review is from: The Dalai Lama's Book of Wisdom (Paperback)
I'm never without this book - it is what I can thumb through anytime, anywhere, and get inspiration about life and it's up's and downs, and how to put them into perspetive. It is torn and tatterd, traveling through life in my purse, but it's always there when I need it! How many books can you say that about? How many people?

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Dalai Lama Book So Far, January 13, 2004
This review is from: The Dalai Lama's Book of Wisdom (Paperback)
(4.75 Stars)

I've read a few books by His Holiness the Dalai Lama so far and honestly I've struggled through all of them.

The Dalai Lama's Book Of Wisdom is the best one I`ve read to date. It's the easiest to read as well as being very simple and at the same time deep in it's content.

It's divided into 4 short wonderful sections:

Contentment, Joy and Living Well
Facing Death and Dying
Dealing With Anger and Emotion
Giving and Receiving

It's one of those books that you can keep by your night table or in your meditation area or wherever and take a look at it every so often.

The cover is so warm, inviting and peaceful that I might just have to get another copy, cut the cover out and frame it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise, June 21, 2006
By
John (Southern California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Dalai Lama's Book of Wisdom (Paperback)
I never bought a Buddhist book before. I just found this while perusing in a book store. It contains brief passages that fit on tiny pages. They made so much sense as I began reading them on my feet that I felt compelled to buy it. Later I felt a touch of "buyer's remorse" until I began reading it again today. It is indeed a simple, practical guide to dealing with day-to-day vicissitudes (get out your dictionary) that does not conflict with my beliefs. It only conflicts with my own preconceptions of what the book was when I first saw it on the shelf.
