Book Description

4 and up
The paintings of Salvador Dali, with their dreamy imagery, have a special appeal to children, who respond to the sense of imagination and whimsy they see. In Dali and the Path of Dreams, author Anna Obiols and illustrator Joan Subirana create an adventure story for young Dali inspired by the famous painter's style. Little Salvi, as he's known, rides on a long-legged elephant, encounters a chef who tosses clocks like pancakes, finds a magic key, flies on a floating boat, and does much more in this charming tribute to the seminal surrealist.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5–Little Salvi goes on a surreal adventure that begins with finding a key under the ocean. He then rides a long-legged elephant, comes across pizza-shaped clocks, sails through the air in a rowboat, and explores a strange tower. In one room, a piano plays as unusual objects and strange people emerge from the corners and eventually settle down to live in a drawer for a very long time. The book ends with an adult Salvador Dali reaching back to his childhood, and the drawer, for inspiration. Each page contains elements from Dali's life and his famous paintings. With their dreamlike quality, the pictures are a little like a visual trip down the rabbit hole; they are more entertaining and enlightening than the story, which is rather plodding. Students who are studying the surrealists might find it interesting to compare this book with Dali's art to see how Subirana wove symbols from his work into her illustrations. More of a novelty than a story, this is an additional purchase.–Elaine Lesh Morgan, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR

Review

This charming work takes Salvador Dali's most famous motifs, including melting clocks, long-legged elephants and magical chests of drawers, and weaves them into a story introducing the work of the artist to the youngest child. www.bettybookmark.co.uk --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dali for Children, May 24, 2007
This review is from: Dali and the Path of Dreams (Hardcover)
Dali is appealing to children because they identify with fantasy, and this book is beautifully done, holding my grandchildren's interest over and over again. We're going to Spain and will see some of his original works, so with this preparation, I'm sure they will have a richer experience seeing the real thing. It's a great book!
