Book Description

Anita Cooper was three times a victim. Her father's death crushed her dreams of college and a better life. Then her purity was drowned in powerless anxiety and her gentle fantasies displaced by unspeakable humiliation, all because of a hard man who knew the way of the world. Rod Mantooth stole both her innocence and her father's legacy, a secret that could have rebuilt her life.

Anita was lost until she encountered another hard man who knew the way of the world - the urban paladin and professional troubleshooter named Hannibal Jones. Like a rolling mass of icy fury, Hannibal followed the trail of corrupted human debris that would lead to Rod Mantooth and a final showdown in the icy waters of the Atlantic.

Review

...a fast-paced, thrilling novel that will keep readers frantically reading to the last page. Leaves readers wanting more. -- The Romance Reader's Connection, December 2005

Abuse is never an easy topic to write about, but Camacho manages to do it with integrity. --Crime and Suspense Magazine, June 2006

About the Author

Austin S. Camacho is the author of the Hannibal Jones Detective Series (The Troubleshooter, Blood and Bone, Collateral Damage and Damaged Goods) and the new Stark and O’Brien Adventure series which starts with The Payback Assignment. Active in several writer organizations, he is the 2005-2006 president of the Maryland Writers Association and is a regular speaker at various writer’s and book lovers’ conventions. He also currently teaches three writing courses at the Anne Arundel Community College. Camacho was born in New York City but grew up in Saratoga Springs, New York. He majored in psychology at Union College in Schenectady, New York. There he read a number of good books, learned to tell good beer from bad, and became a brother in the Alpha Delpha Phi fraternity. Actually, the frat was largely responsible for the books and the beer. Dwindling finances and escalating costs brought his college days to an end after three years. Then came the factory work, the five years selling insurance, and finally, the Army. He enlisted as a weapons repairman but soon moved into a more appropriate field. The Army trained him to be a broadcast journalist. Disc jockey time alternated with news writing, video camera and editing work public affairs assignments and news anchor duties. During his thirteen years as a soldier, Austin lived in Missouri, California, Maryland, Georgia and Belgium. He also spent a couple of exciting weeks in Israel during Desert Storm, covering the action with the Patriot missile crews and capturing scud showers on video tape. While enlisted he finished his Bachelor's Degree at night and started his Master's, and rose to the rank of Sergeant First Class. And in his spare moments, he began writing adventure and mystery novels set in some of the exotic places he'd visited. After leaving the Army in 1996 he continued writing military news for the Defense Department as a civilian, frequently serving as on air anchor for the American Forces Information Service. Today he does public affairs work for the DOD agency charged with guarding the health of service members when they are deployed. He has settled in northern Virginia with his wife Denise. When he's not writing Austin likes to run along the shores of the Potomac, watch action films, and shoot - at paper targets, not live ones. He is a voracious reader of just about any kind of nonfiction, plus mysteries, adventures and thrillers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Damaged Goods October 19, 2006
Format:Paperback
I first met Mr. Camacho at a book fair and Woodbridge,VA. After reading his first two books I was hooked and you will be as well.

Damaged Goods is one of the best if not the best book I have ever read. You feel as if you are right there in the book with everyone. I cried with the characters and laughed and even cheered when the good guys won.

I have passed this book to a few special friends that have also read this book. This book helped myself and a few others see that we are not alone. This book will hit home but I promise you will never want to put it down.

Austin has a wonderful way of making you feel at home in his books. He has been blessed with a real gift for writing. I am looking forward to future books by him.

Happy reading everyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Thriller!! March 10, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
"Damaged Goods" is the second book that I've read and reviewed by this talented author. The first one is not part of this series, therefore, this is my first exposure to the main character, Hannibal Jones. He is what appears to be a really "neat" guy. He is a private investigator who knows how to get to the bottom of any problem that comes his way. Jones is extremely capable and efficient as he sniffs out a crime in order to bring about some kind of justice in his own unique way. In this fictional novel, Jones remains unintimidated by some heavy duty, mob connected individuals...and refuses to cower in the presence of some very descriptive crime scenes. He also appears to be a man with a conscience which further endears him to me. His main squeeze is successful lawyer, Cindy Santiago, whose presence spices up the plot with their little romance.

Author Austin Camacho manages to adeptly spin a suspenseful yarn as he entices his reading audience to be drawn right into the storyline. He certainly had my attention right from the get go. I not only enjoyed the main character, Hannibal Jones, but also his supporting cast of individuals who add to the thrill of this mystery. Yes...this is definitely a great mystery thriller, as it kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. It offers many twists and turns and a very unpredictable ending. Good stuff!

Great novel. It surprised me; it was different from the previous Hannibal Jones mysteries. There was less beating up bad guys and more vulnerability. As usual, the characters were all very interesting and very unique. Read this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Exhilarating! May 22, 2006
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As the world's worst critic, I'd like to say that Austin Camacho is a gifted writer; and I do not mean excellent in spelling and grammar - he actually knows how to tell a story! Damaged Goods is written in a manner that leaves you hanging on every word. In fact, what I liked most about the book is how he gives vivid descriptions of each scene and puts you right in the thick of things. His character development of Hannibal Jones gives you the illusion that you can actually pick up the phone and invite him to your next barbecue.

Austin did an excellent job pulling his audience into each scene. His descriptions were natural and flowed well from scene to scene. I believe that is why it rapidly captured my attention. In fact, it did not take long for me to read this book and that is a good thing because my schedule is so hectic. However, Damaged Goods was such an intriguing story, that I found myself reaching for the book every chance I got.

Austin has a very nice writing style. He exhibits creativity when he eases various characters into a life of stability after being homeless. I especially like the way the story opens up at the Club with Anita and her friend. In fact, it all started with the business card and eventually led to a millionaire named Ben Blair. Each scene is well orchestrated thus leaving you longing for more.

If you have a desire to be an author, I recommend reading this book because the way it is written is the best example of writing I can share with anyone. Additionally, it is very entertaining!

5.0 out of 5 stars Damaged Goods February 16, 2012

I enjoyed this book so much! Loved the main hero Hannibal Jones! What an Alpha Male Hero! I was so busy turning the pages that my poor husband had to do all the chores! The suspense never let's up! The action is well planned! It is a taut, fast pace action thriller with just enough of romance interweaved! I loved the fact that that the author, Mr Camacho, made Hannibal a very human hero, who wins a few and loses a few! For fans of Action Thrillers this is a book well worth reading! I am definitely a FAN!

5.0 out of 5 stars shooting trouble! May 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the first Hannibal Jones book I've read, and it is a delight on all levels. The writing is excellent to exquisite. the characters are believable (including the hero, who can do amazing things, but is still extremely human). the setting is lovingly and meticulously drawn, in several locales, and the story left me absolutely breathless on more than one occasion.

I especially enjoyed some of the side action, for example, the examination of hip hop music ...with which I am absolutely unacquainted, and the insight into lifestyles with which I do not have, and will never have experience. they added texture and color to this book, without detracting in the least from the story line. In fact, the author drew all the threads together in a smooth, professional manner that impressed me.

Toward the end, I admit to thinking *now* what's going to happen? And something always did, but, surprising and delighting me, what happened was never quite predictable, so I didn't mind what seemed an extended climax. All in all, this is a wonderful read, and offers more than a little of more than a few things for any reader.
