I've gone through about 80% of the book, and am really impressed by the story and the author's ability to write. Also found and old book by the author on Interlibrary loan, describing his experiences in WWII. He was a Amee Leutnant who lost his home and his leg early in the war, serving in France and Russia. I don't think he was Jewish but his description of the travails of the Jews is outstanding.

I read it in Germany when I was in third grade. I got the translated version into English (it's by far not the same).
A lot get's lost in translation.
I gave it four stars, because I received the book with a different cover, than what I saw and thought I ordered! Its a drawing of a little boy behind shattered glass! This is actually exactly what I had in elementary school, but I wanted this book with the same cover as advertised! However, it is still a good read for young and old through the eyes of children, dealing with war, family, and friendship.

This book is used as one of the texts high school students are reading in our advanced German classes. It presents a good insight into the effects of organized hatred of a minority and the people involved. A little bit of the of the vocabulary has yet to make it into Google which the students use for looking up unfamiliar words.

Fredrich
This book is all about a Jewish boy who is put through tourture just because he's a Jew.He has a very close friend the narrator who is not a Jew.The narrator tries and defends Fredrich from the anti Jews.In the novel there is alot of conflict. In the end i think it is a good book aiming to people at the age of 13+
