Damascus steel was first used to make swords that were famous as the best in the world and is legendary for its strength and sharpness since it was invented in the Middle East around 900 A.D. The Damascus blade is made of 1084 High Carbon Steel which is pattern welded with a mild WS1 Steel to create a lamination of over 260 layers of steel metals. It is then grinded and polished specifically to expose the distinctive layers and reveal a beautiful grain pattern. No two blades are exactly alike. The resulting edge has been Rockwell tested between 56-58, a strength considered to be the perfect blade hardness; not too brittle to break nor too soft to lose an edge. A Damascus blade may be harder to sharpen, but it will keep its edge and stay sharp longer. The handle of this handsome knife is carved from genuine Sambar Stag, which is a natural stag antler and perfectly balanced for comfort and ease of use. The stag handle was authentic and very nice, however that is where the quality ends. The blade is not real Damascus, it is Damascus "patterned" steel. It looks much less nice than in the picture. The blade is also very dull, think butterknife. There is no notch or mechanism that holds the blade closed, and therefore the blade can easily swing open in your pocket. When opened the blade did not lock without firmly pressing the thumb stud to open it all the way and lock. The quality is nowhere near adequate for the price. Sells for $50, feels like $15 quality. Don't waste your money and time. Returning the one I purchased as a gift.

This is a great knife. Just the right size for a pocket knife, but of course much more beautiful than any ordinary blade. Gorgeous design; the area for the liner lock is perfectly constructed so the knife can be opened and closed safely but doesn't detract from the knife's attractiveness, and the antler handle combined with the Damascus pattern makes it aesthetically pleasing. Plus, it's a very well-crafted knife. I love it!
