A book for screaming!,

At long last, the homage to Robert Maguire. His work has always been appreciated by pulp collectors, but perhaps not as identifiable as his fellow greats in the brush trade. Robert McGinnis is unmistakable for his stylized women; James Avati for his painstaking realism; Robert Bonfils for his crazed eroticism; Paul Rader for his classic perfection; Rudolph Belarski for his pure pulp style; Bill Ward and Gene Bilbrew for their fetish weirdness. The Maguire style isn't so distinctive, but he never failed to dish up eye-catching, sexy Rat Pack-era covers that stirred the male imagination (and early feminist ire)--and sold plenty of books. Sold for a quarter at newsstands and drugstores, and considered throwaway trash, the art of these old paperbacks was often a hundred times superior to what was between the covers. Maguire belongs in the circle of vintage paperback legends. This large tribute delivers plenty of what you want, big bold beautiful Maguire covers, including originals, sketches and model photos. And what dames, enough to give the politically correct of today convulsions! The informative text is by Jim Silke and the foreword by Lynn Maguire, who also presents her father's work at her website and at paperback shows. A perhaps not-so-minor complaint: Omitted from the book is probably Maguire's best cover and maybe the best vintage paperback cover of all time: A Night For Screaming published by Ace Doubles in 1960. That's the knockout cover of a buxom blonde with a gun running away from a pursuing car across a dark field. A pulp noir classic and Maguire's masterpiece . . . somehow not included here.

Remembering Robert A. Maguire,

What is is that makes you buy a book? A recommendation from a friend? A glowing review? A topic you've always wanted to explore? Or does it have something to do with the appeal of the cover itself? In these days of cover art that features abstractions, fancy font work, and photography, you may walk right past some books you might have enjoyed. Their covers just don't call to you.
But that would never have happened in the Golden Age of the Pulp Paperbacks: the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, when those wonderful covers would reach out and grab you and never let go. There were perhaps a dozen really fine artists who produced those covers: Frank Frazetta, Robert McGinnis, Barye Phillips, James Avati, and James Bama, to name a very few. But none is better loved or more fondly remembered than Robert A. Maguire. If you ever picked up a Gold Medal or Pocket Book, a Dell, an Ace or Avon, Bantam, or Ballantine, you know Bob Maguire's work. You may have been an original reader or you may now be an avid collector. But you certainly have gazed at those irresistible women and lovable tough guys that Bob rendered so brilliatly in over 600 paintings. Bob's energetic and colorful covers, starting with detective stories in the 1950s and going on to adorn every genre and major pulp publisher of the era, were much coveted by those of us who actually wrote the pulps. We never knew, until we ripped off the plain brown wrappers, whose art work we would find bringing our characters to life. And there were a few that were inept, irrelevant, or just plain sleazy. But that was never Robert Maguire's way. I have watched new editions of some of my own novels fly off the shelves, enhanced by the most beautiful Maguire women imaginable. Of all the top-notch illustrators, it was Bob who was fabled for giving his cover girls the most exquisite eyes and the most inviting lips. (The rest wasn't bad, either!) And I say this as a writer who can boast original covers by both Barye Phillips and Robert McGinnis, two of the finest, as well. I had to wait till the 21st Century to acquire my Maguires, and now I'm lucky enough to have several on the Cleis Press editions of my books. As a good-looking young man, Robert Maguire would sometimes pose for his own rugged cover heroes. There are some terrific photos of Bob emoting like an Oscar winner, and you see the results in the cover paintings based on them. Take a look at THE FLESH WAS COLD, DRESSED TO KILL, and dozens of othes. But the real stars on his covers are the women--"the ladies," as he liked to call them. They are supernaturally beautiful, as in the bewitching fantasy girl of BLACK OPIUM, one of his most collectible, and the saucy teaser of HELL'S ANGELS. But they are also somehow vulnerable and human, approachable despite their grace and glamour. My own special favorite is the cover of YOUNG AND INNOCENT, with two of the most stunning young women in all of pulpdom. True to the paperback fiction tradition, the alluring vixen in the background is a brunette, and she looks about as innocent as Mata Hari. Just in front of her is an even lovelier blond, the very image of heedless purity. We know at once where this is headed: it's a whole novel in one breath-taking portrait. It is true that the marketing of the pulp paperbacks was a collaboration of talents between the illustrators and the authors, mid-wived by the clever blurb writers in the editorial office. The artists lured you into buying the books--who could resist? Then it was the novelist's turn. If the story was a good one, you came back for the writer's next book. But remember--you would never have picked it up in the first place if Robert A. Maguire hadn't been calling to you from the cover. He had an unusual sensitivity to the needs of the narrative and the humanity of the characters. This gift is never more apparent than in the illustrations he created for the lesbian pulps, infused as they are with youthful loveliness, hurt, and hope. It's real artistic magic. Bob did other kinds of work besides the pulps--magazine covers, romance illustrations, scenics, and fine art. I don't think he ever realized quite how good, how valuable, and how collectible his life's work truly was. It is up to those of us who loved it to validate his legacy. Bob is gone now. But I am so lucky to have met him at the Collector's Paperback and Pulp Fiction Expo in New York in 2003, organized annually by Gary Lovisi. Bob was jovial and charming, and we had our picture taken together--one of my treasures. [...] When I told him he was famous for the magnificent eyes of his "ladies," he drew one for me. And he autographed copies of my covers, including YOUNG AND INNOCENT,now reincarnated as the very essence of the new edition of my own novel, BEEBO BRINKER (Cleis Press). There is now a beautiful new book available, DAMES, DOLLS, AND GUN MOLLS, capturing the best of Robert A. Maguire's work over a long and productive lifetime. Written with wit and insight by artist Jim Silke and lavishly illustrated, it gives the reader not only a visual feast of Bob Maguire's paintings, but fascinating information about how he matured as an artist, how he worked, and the use he made of photos and color references as the basis for finished cover art. One of the best features of the book is the touching and affectionate Foreword written by Maguire's daughter Lynn, who loved him deeply and may have known him best. He would have loved it. Am I a fan? You bet--forever!

The artistic legend of paperback cover art at his best!,
By
This review is from: Dames, Dolls, And Gun Molls (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book that delves into the illustrious career of Robert Maguire, artistic legend of paperback cover art! This book is full of wonderful artworks by the artistic legend, with historical descriptions of his career chronology: from his beginnings as the artist of the iconic 'Tomboy' book by Hal Ellson; to his notoriety as one of the most renowned cover artist of pulp crime fiction novels featuring dashing detectives and femme fatales; and to his career painting cover art for romance novels! He has consistently created some of the most iconic artworks ever painted at each of the defining periods of the paperback illustration art eras, from the Golden Age of 50s pulp crime fiction art, all the way to the modern age! This full-color book showcases some of the loveliest artworks I've seen, and I'm sure you will agree when you get your hands on the book! What I love most about the book is the introduction by Lynn Maguire, daughter of the artistic legend. The introduction details her personal memories about her father, and in my opinion, this alone is well worth the price of the book. Her descriptions about her father gives us a small glimpse of who the man behind the legend was, and this alone is truly priceless. I also like the description of the Robert Maguire artistic process, described in detail by Jim Silke, renowned artist. As an artist and art lover, I believe the analysis of Robert Maguire's artistic process is a great learning tool for those who are admirers of wonderful art! Highly recommended!

good book for the money,
This review is from: Dames, Dolls, And Gun Molls (Paperback)
Although I really enjoyed this book I just can't give it 5 stars. Most of the dark horse published books are hardcover so this being paperback is a disappointment. Also there could have been more content. It's a very good book for what it is, but compared to some of the opulent collections celebrating other artists the past few years it just leaves you wanting more. Hopefully a volume 2 will come out one day.

Magnificent Tribute to Robert A. Maguire,

This review is from: Dames, Dolls, And Gun Molls (Paperback)
This book is a MUST HAVE for any and every person who calls themselves a fan of either Robert A. Maguire, collectors of vintage paperbacks or collectors of vintage paperback original artwork as I am. Starting with a very lovely and touching foreword by the artist's daughter Lynn, you immediately realize you're going to be in for a treat. The book features 112 slick pages jam packed with full color images of dozens of Maguire's mostly vintage original paintings that had been published as covers for paperbacks, as well as images of the vintage paperbacks themselves. Accompanying all the great imagery is some text which gives the reader a pretty solid telling of the artist's career. Make no mistake though, this is primarily an art book, so the majority of it is filled with gorgeous artwork. If there is anything 'negative' to point out about this fabulous book, it would be simply that I wish the page count could have been at least double the current 112 pages!
You cannot go wrong by owning this, especially at Amazon's low price. So BUY THIS BOOK!

This is an easy read. Gives you a little history on the era. Little things I never knew were revealed about book cover making. The section on how Maguire actually painted and drew his projects was at the end and was very short but they at least peppered various techniques throughout. I recommend this book.

Jim Silke has done an outstanding job of giving pulp paperback fans a perfect overview of master artist Robert Maguire's gorgeous "Dames, Dolls and Gun Molls." Really, I could flip through this slim volume repeatedly and not be seduced by these beauties. Naturally, it would've been great to have even more, but I'm not complaining. I'm just glad this book is back in print.

When I was a student at The American Academy of Art, and later in undergraduate school and graduate school I recall seeing the covers of pulp fiction and later SCI-Fi and Romance novels painted by Robert A. Maguire. However, only one of those subject areas were of interest to me, science fiction and most of my reading in that area were of the classics so contemporary sci-fi was not appealing to me. But my maternal granddad read every pulp paperback ever printed and my mom bought all of the other magazines, but mom thought that paperbacks were too sleazy, so the only way I ever got to study them was when I browsed the paperback section or my granddad's collection. Between my grand dad's collection and the other magazines my mom bought, I was able to study the art of Cornwell, Rockwell, Fawcett, Von Schmidt and many others.
As I got older I bought many paperbacks illustrated by Frazetta just for the covers and seldom read the content. Not long ago I bought DAMES, DOLLS, & GUN MOLLS THE ART OF ROBERT A. MAGUIRE, by artist Jim Silke, who is also quite an accomplished Illustrator. I was bowled over by the sheer delight of Maguire's images of "bad girls." For the first time I was able to really appreciate the great talent Bob Maguire had for illustrating such figures. Outstanding examples of Illustration Art! His female figures were of a pure and simple style, of beauty, sensuous and beguiling women and so well painted. Later in his career he branched out into illustrating Romantic novels. you know the ones bought overwhelmingly by females. Stories of strong male heroes who overpowered beautiful maidens, but who later fell in love with them, and rescued them from others. The stories were all pretty much of the formula outlined in the previous sentence, but females gobbled them up like M&M's or JUJUBEEs, by the arms full according to our neighborhood book store owners and as far as I know they still do. Silke outlines Maguire's methods, media, and deadline preparations, often displaying photos of models taken by Maguire's photographers. The the book is a softcover, 112 pages, in a robust 9" x 12" format and the color reproductions are outstanding and often large and clear. If you love great and colorful magazine and paperback or pulp illustrations of beautiful women and also, here and there, guys who are sometimes rats or sword in hand heroes, you will love Maguire art. Sometimes men were the victims of the women who, at times, seem very adept at plying gun and knife, and Maguire covers both genders excellently. You must buy this book, especially if you are an artist, illustrator, art enthusiast, or simply a collector. I am planning to buy a second one to keep free of use and for my self, because I am afraid that it will become dog-eared, as I use this book so often to show my models what I am looking for in facial expression and even poses, now and then. I look forward to more of such books by Jim Silke and just also bought a book by him on his own art. GREAT FINDS!

Nobody Better,
By
This review is from: Dames, Dolls, And Gun Molls (Paperback)
Thanks to Jim Silke and Dark Horse for this gorgeous art book. With all due respect to Robert McGinnis and the other great paperback illustrators of the fifties, Maguire's girls are just on a different level. No one was better at conveying sexuality and menace in a painting. "Dames, Dolls and Gun Molls" is just about everything one could have wanted in a Robert Maguire retrospective. The artwork just jumps off the page like it must have jumped off those paperback racks back in the 1950's. No wonder he was in such demand by so many publishers. Yeah, maybe the volume could have been a little bigger, but that's a minor thing. I think Silke has done a great job of assembling Maguire's best. If this book ever goes out of print, it will certainly be a sought-after collectable. Get it while it's still a bargain.
