1.0 out of 5 stars Overbearing
The introspective singer songwriter has become nearly as common as the studio born popstar. So, it takes more than a few thoughtful lyrics, the ability to carry a tune and a sparsely strummed guitar to impress my ears.

Rice's voice seems pleasant if not sweet at the onset, but midway through the album his often keening vocals grate on the nerves. The songwriting suffers...

filled with unbelievably moving lyrics and amazing guitar work, his voice is perfectly complimented by lisa's . it is impossible to categorise this CD, it ranges from close-to-silent voice only songs to rising multi layered songs, one climaxing with a moving operatic finish.

i have given this CD to everyone i know, i find no matter what their traditional musical taste everyone has loved it. BUY this CD, get him widely known, and if you ever have the chance to see him live GRAB it.

5.0 out of 5 stars beyond 5 stars..really!!, May 13, 2003
This review is from: O (Audio CD)
This is a truly incredible album. I have given 5 stars to albums before but now I wish I hadn't cos this album is beyond 5 stars. I was painting the house at the time when I first heard it, and had to stop and listen! It blew me away; It makes you wonder how someone could create and deliver songs of such beauty and depth armed with little more than a guitar, some stunning vocals from Damien and partner Lisa, and the occasional use of strings! Its hard to single out individual tracks as the album just flows effortlessly from track #1 to the final track but Blowers Daughter,Amie and Eskimo are my faves. I cannot recommend it highly enough, but suffice to say when my son borrowed it (without telling me!) I had withdrawal symptoms. This is a truly great album and I hope it is promoted properly in the USA so as many people as possible can hear it and buy it. Damien Rice deserves to be a massive star.

4.0 out of 5 stars Up and coming, June 6, 2003
This review is from: O (Audio CD)
There is no doubt that Damien Rice is an excellent songwriter and a fantastic singer. And this is one of those rare albums that you'll fall in love with after just one sitting. Although listening to the whole album in one go can be somewhat exhausting, it's worth it. The songs are a wonderful blend of genres subtley interlaced into Damien's unique style. He manages to exude a combination of total energy and total relaxation. It's the epitome of cool. It's the tension created by that blend that leaves you struggling to catch your breath at the end of the album.

As fantastic as the album is, however, it still doesn't manage to capture the feeling you get when you see him live (that's why every review here mentions his live performances). The only times I've seen Damien Rice perform were at the open mike sessions at Molloy's in Dublin, back in 2000 - and it was unbelievable. That spirit, its essence, needs to be captured before I can say give an album of his 5 stars. The reason that this has 4 is because I just don't think that this one lives up to how good he is and when one is released that does, I want to be able to give it the full 5 stars that it deserves!

On the other hand, you should buy the album to get a taste for what he's doing (and to support a fantastic musician). He is nothing but pleasure to listen to, his melodies are exquisite, his music is infinitely powerful; have a listen to Blower's Daughter and you will instantly fall in love.

I can't wait to hear his next album, but for now, I'll definitely be happy with this one. You will too.

5.0 out of 5 stars painfully good, January 23, 2004

Quite simply put, this albulmn will make you ache. Specifically Blower's Daughter and Cannonball will break your heart. Damien's music seems to pull deep emotion up to just below the surface of your skin. His music captures and conveys the bittersweet agony of being in love. Several songs on the albumn nearly brought me to tears. Although I found this to be somehow disturbing I am willing to conceed that this is an indication of a truly stunning musical experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing...simply amazing, May 25, 2003
This review is from: O (Audio CD)
i don't think words can even explain just how amazing this album is. damien sings the 10 songs of this album beautifuly and tells an amazing story that anyone can relate to about falling for someone, and finally realizing that they don't love you back...although every track is simply astounding, my highlights have to be 4. Cannonball, 6. Amie, 7. Cheers darlin', and 9. I Remember. He just got signed with Warner Brothers/Reprise, so look for O to be released in the states soon. also, go see him at a show if you can get to it, it is definately worth whatever you have to pay.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the Best !!!, May 20, 2004
This review is from: O (Audio CD)
This is just the best Album I have bought, ever! I found this little jem just before xmas 03 and haven't stopped listening to it since. Today for example I've played the album twice, and that was all the way through without skipping a track. Scared of over playing it and getting sick of it??? No! There is too much talent and emotion in it just to be played and forgotten

There is a good and bad side to this Album, the good being that none of the songs apart from Cannonball get played on radio (BBC radio 2) The bad thing is none of the songs really get played on radio, so anyone I know who has heard of Damien Rice has found him through word of mouth, yeah me!

Damien blows them all out of the water for his song writing. The musician ship is just way out there, and Lisa Hannigan's voice is just beautiful. When I listen to cold water and her her sing I melt, I haven't really listened to the lyrics to here what they are saying on this song, I just haven't gotten past her voice yet, thats the thing with this album there's layer upon layer of music, lyrics, and emotion.

it`s very simple, you like the new Beck??
you like such artists like Nick Drake, John Mayer, Duncan Sheik, Tim & Jeff Buckley, The Counting Crows, Bob Dylan?
Then this one`s for you.
It`s simple but beautiful.
Acoustic Folk.
Well written Lyrics, great Voices (both Damien & Lisa) and ten absolutley lovley songs.

my advise: buy it now and even order a second copy if your first gets destroyed by overplaying.

Damien Rice with his powerful vocals and emotional lyrics really bring out the everyday ironies that he brilliantly smiles inwardly on. Its compelling and deeply moving. Its truely is worth every cent you spend and you will be amazed with every song......Its something you can pop in and not have to change tracks its that good with the instrumentals and beautiful accompaniments. If you havent noticed I love this cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm keeping it - it's mine now, October 23, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: O (Audio CD)
I bought this CD for my daughter because she really liked the video for "Volcano" when she saw it on tv. She was able to listen to it for a few days, as I was engrossed in "True Love Waits" by Christopher O'Riley (another awesome CD). After a few days, I borrowed "O" in order to have a listen. It's been over a week now and you know what? She's not getting her CD back...it's mine now.
