4.0 out of 5 stars Shows Promise..., March 15, 2005

be your own PET (not FEET, as the editorial review states) are not even out of high school and already have a single out on XL and are getting heavy play on Zane Lowe's program on BBC Radio 1. They are evidently due to graduate HS this year when they will, no doubt, tour the world (the world being W. Europe & NYC).

Their first single "Damn Damn Leash" has all the punch & energy of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs first EP. I'm not sure when this is due for a US release. This has three really good songs from a talented young Nashville punk band -- if this isn't available off iTunes and you can, in any way, feel good about paying 12 bucks for three songs, then you'll be pleasantly surprised, and singing (and cursing) along for weeks to come.

I can't wait for their first LP.

4.0 out of 5 stars Post Punk New Wave revivalists finally graduate!!, August 15, 2005
This review is from: Damn Damn Leash (Dig) (Audio CD)
Well now that I've acquired Damn Damn Leash as a single, I can genuinely look forward to what seems like it will be a very exciting full length LP. The kids on this record (fresh out of high school!) take the New Wave Revival to the next level than Yeah Yeah Yeah's, who's jagged melodies and vocals evoked a nostalgic Pretenders vibe, and The Sounds, who could have been the love child of Abba and Blondie, had that been anatomically possible. (In fact, if you liked what The Sounds were trying to do but thought it could have a more original pull, Be Your Own PET may be what you've been looking for!)

Group Member Jamin's chaotic and danceable beat work may get you nostalgic for an old Gang Of Four record, or maybe even the more recent sounds of The Bravery or Franz Ferdinand, but throw in Singer Jemina's sexy and fun vocals with Jonas' excellent guitar modes and Nathan's exhilarating bass movements and you'll be dying for more! I first heard this single on satellite radio, which in these troubled times in music, may be your best bet. B-sides Spill and Electric Shake have a similar feel and surround, and the songs range from 2-3 minutes(Title track is just under 2 minutes!), so I'll definitely be in line for an upcoming LP!

5.0 out of 5 stars Be Your Own Emo? Heck no!, August 2, 2006
By
This review is from: Damn Damn Leash (Dig) (Audio CD)
Be Your Own Pet is a wonderfully raucous band from the bowels of the South. Apparently, some sour emos aren't too happy with the fact that they viciously insulted some very "talented" bands (who, in my opinion, deserved it). I must say, however, that despite the fact that Be Your Own Pet may sound "talentless" to some, I disagree. Be Your Own Pet, unfortunately for those who may have recently attended Warp Tour '06, does not sound like every other popular band in music today. Be Your Own Pet takes good old fashioned punk and amps it up with a few drops of teenage angst and some nice little riffs and shouts. Yes, their sound may not be a perfectly produced and polished one, but therein lies the fun, and that's what this band is all about: fun. Their lyrics, although good, are not rich and poetic. Bright Eyes this is not. The lyrics are fun and will click instantly with any (well, almost any) teenager, or most music fans in general who have a sense of fun and enjoy a little music which screams, literally, "F**k s**t up!"

The bottom line is this: this is not a band which you and your friends can play while you cry, cut yourselves and discuss how horrible and pointless life is. This is a band for those of us who love music, punk, life, being a teenager, and perhaps the stray party here and there. This is a band for today. This is the band that will chase away the screamo sissy pansies and clear the way for more real music to arrive.
