Grade 6-9. Gilbert's portrayal of the New York Yankees under the wise and unorthodox tutelage of malaprop-prone Casey Stengel gives proper homage to both the proud history of Yankee greats like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Joe DiMaggio and also the stars that Stengel developed between 1949-1964?Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra, and Roger Maris. In chronological order, Gilbert highlights each winning season of the "Bronx Bombers" and their 15-year domination of professional baseball. His narrative is driven largely by statistics and exciting action, and personalized by black-and-white photos of many players (and an especially memorable photo of Stengel gazing into a crystal ball) and quotes from the era's major players. To round out his appreciative look at this great team, the author skillfully weaves in the story of the dramatic National League rivalry between the then-Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants. He also includes the equally dramatic story of Jackie Robinson's heroic struggle to maintain his dignity and play quality baseball in the face of vicious racial taunts and discriminatory treatment while traveling with his team. A partisan portrait of a memorable team and an authoritative account of an exciting era of baseball history.?Jack Forman, Mesa College Library, San Diego
