5.0 out of 5 stars Boat Storage
I place 2, 4lb containers of Damp Rid in my boat each winter before the tarps go on for the outdoor winter storage. When I uncover the boat (32ft) in the late spring, the interior is dry, smells fresh and mildew free. Before I discovered Damp Rid, I would be cleaning some mildew out of the boat each year...no matter how waterproof the covers were. I don't have the luxury...

I don't have the luxury of indoor storage so this is the next best thing.

I have purchased 8 of these... and 7 of them arrived so badly disturbed/shaken that I had to tear open the protective film, reset the tray, and pour the damp rid product back on top...otherwise it wouldn't work properly. Some of of us remember how it used to be; you poured the product on top of the tray, it would capture/dribble moisture down through its holes into the trap container below, pour out liquid, repeat. Now, they these arrive pre-packaged, I guess to make it safer? with a paper like film on top. Well, that is all fine and good, except for the shipping process. I don't know how the 1 out of the 8 made it intact, but the rest were so bad that I worried that it the mixing of the top/bottom reagents would ruin the process. One tub was crushed so badly that product was pouring onto other things in my box... it was a real mess. These big tubs not only have a huge amount of damp rid product on top of the plastic tray... but some sort of absorbant material in the 'catch' tub below...I guess that is to prevent overspilling? Sketchy if you ask me. These WILL MIX during shipment, the tray will become unseated, and the whole thing could become compromised. (Mine did 7/8 times). I am watching mine closely... all 8... because with this freakish hot/humid weather my house needs help. I will update if the tub spills over like other reviewers noted.

4.0 out of 5 stars DampRid, October 12, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I use two of these every winter on the boat when it goes into storage. The DampRid works well. My only negative comment is I received one last year that it appears during shipment the side of the bucket was cracked and when I picked the boat up in the spring, some of the material in the DampRid bucket made it's way out of the crack on the bucket. Other then that, the product works well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gets rid of odors, centipedes, September 6, 2011

Living in a lower level apartment (*cough*basement*cough*), some areas that aren't heavily used start to smell a tiny bit stale and musty. This happens because of excess moisture caused by rain seeping through the foundation. Mold and bugs tend to like this kind of environment and I don't like mold, bugs, or humidity!

The product does remove SOME humidity from the air. Using a hygrometer, I measured the humidity in a room for several hours. It had not rained in a couple of days and had remained at 57%. After placing the bucket of DampRid into the same room, after a half hour, humidity was 53%. However, this isn't an excellent test. To perform a proper test, I'd need two hygrometers, two of the same room, and the same conditions in each room, so I can't say that this reduces humidity by exactly 4%. What I can say is that I have only seen one house centipede all summer (the past few summers, I would see them a few times per day) and that my entryway no longer smells like a cave.

These are supposed to have a lifespan of 6 months, but mine have plenty of life left after being active for the summer.

Unless you have Amazon Prime, you can find the buckets cheaper at Home Depot. Actually, even if you do have Amazon Prime, they still cost less at Home Depot (if you walk to Home Depot).

Well I put this in and we went out to dinner and when we came back I said what is that smell in here, very fresh and clean smell( forgot about the bucket I put in and realized it was it, amazing cause it was hot and humid out but garage smelled clean. So happy we got this.

1.0 out of 5 stars Crystals were mostly used up., April 5, 2011

The crystals were mostly used up when it got to me. It wasn't until I purchased replacement crystals that I bought a week later that I realized this. It is likely due to improper storage of this item or improper seals (aka moisture was allowed to seap in). Just go down to Ace Hardware and buy this. You might pay more but you won't get defective product.
