Dampit is good, damit!,

The dampit guitar humidifiers are great. They are simple and effective. I don't bother with the provided plastic "hole cover" - I just place the humidifier inside the guitar while it's in it's case - that way it humidifies the whole instrument. A word of caution, as is clearly stated in the instructions, make sure to wring out and shake off excess water to avoid staining the unfinished wood inside the guitar. I've never had this problem, but I've read from other folks who mustn't have followed the instructions - and have had a problem. There are other, more expensive, more elaborate humidifying systems out there - but in my opinion, this one out-performs them and is much simpler to use! It's a great product.

I live in the high mountain desert and my home (and guitars) are subjected to temperature extremes despite my having some measure of climate control.I noticed that one of my acoustics was slowing losing its arch in the soundboard and I became concerned that the dry air was destroying this great instrument. After reviewing material on the web about maintaining proper humidity in the guitar itself and viewing a demonstration on how the use of this product had the capacity to restore a dry or drying guitar, I purchased this product with an eye to prevent any further deterioration in my guitar. I am pleased to say that it works. At first I noticed that the guitar was not getting any dryer and the apparent change in the soundboard stopped. After about a month, the arch has come back into the top. I am glad I bought this product. If you choose to use this product, follow directions and get some information from the web (Taylor Guitars for one) on how to tell if the instrument is dry and what to look for as humidity is restored. My only complaint is that the measuring system to determine the level of humidity leaves quite a bit to be desired. Check your local Radio Shack or research and shop for on Amazon an easier to use meter. A great product, you will not be sorry!

Like the super sized,

I've owned two other regular Dampits and this one is huge!Best on the market if you ask me. My guitars are thankful. Why buy one when you can have two? You won't be sorry. Just make sure to squeeze all water out.

Disappointed! Ruined an $1800 guitar's finish!,

I used this EXACTLY according to the instructions and now I have a quarter sized water spot on the back of my guitar. I am sick at my stomach over this. I soaked it. I rung it out for 5 freaking minutes and dried it off. Three days later the wood under the finish is ruined. I couldn't be more disappointed in a product at this point.

Confession time...a few months ago I knew nothing about guitar maintenance...as in I didn't even know you had to do anything special to maintain guitars. I learned the hard way.My guitar started sounding really bad. All my strings were buzzing, even if the strings were played open. I knew something was wrong...so I looked for a culprit. I looked at the nut, and it looked right, I then looked at the bridge...and to my horror it had cracked. I took it to a guitar shop (to my great luck, I happened to live close to one of the premier custom guitar shops in the nation). Turned out my guitar had many problems, including that gnarlly crack. They were able to restore it, with some work...and some pain to my wallet. I say that in this review because almost all of it could have been avoided by storing my guitar with a humidifier. Simply, the wood on my guitar had dried out, bowed, cracked, and was generally upset with me. Now there are many guitar humidifiers on the market, all of which do the job. I just happen to love this one. I did a lot of research on guitar maintenance after my nightmare, and as ugly and unsexy looking as this guy is, he showed up everywhere. That's why I bought it. I have been absolutely pleased with it since. It is easy to use and my guitar loved it. I won't say it is any better or worse than the others...I just know that seemingly everyone recommends it and it works great for me. (I would also highly recommend buying a small cigar hygrometer to keep in you case. It is a great early indicator of what you need to be doing to take care of your guitar.)

Of all the various products designed to maintain proper humidity for one's guitar, I have found that the Dampit Guitar Humidifier Super outperforms the rest. I chose the longer "super" version, simply because it extends further into the lower bout of the guitar and provides humidity for a greater period of time. Used properly by soaking in distilled water and squeezed thoroughly to eliminate the possibility of a single water drop, the Dampit is safe and effective. Unlike other products, the Dampit doesn't simply cover the sound hole of a guitar or rest upon the strings. Instead, it clips on one of the guitar strings and extends into the guitar, allowing moisture to be distributed more evenly inside the instrument. Although Dampit advertises that their product can remain entirely inside the guitar at all times, even while playing, I have only used the humidifier when my guitar is in its case. Also, I have not tried to use the hygrometer provided with this product. I would suggest a more precise hygrometer that remains in your case and one that is placed in the area where one is playing (if possible). Five picks up for this product.

Simple design that works well,

Ordered this for my new Taylor GS Mini guitar I got for Christmas. The product is a simple yet functional design, a sponge inside a rubber tube with holes. If you have a guitar you want to last and live in a cold part of the country its crucial to use something like this. Ideal humidity for a guitar is about 47% and in my house during the winter its only around 30%, so I re-wet this about every 5 days. WARNING: It comes with no instructions, but taylor has some great instructions on their website. Big thing to realize is you have to run this under cold water, then squeeze out every last drop and dry the oustide before placing in the guitar. Then should be wedged in between the B and G strings, and allowed to hang in the body. If you don't squeeze out the sponge then it can drip and ruin the guitar. Also recommend buying a cheap digital humidifier to place in your guitar case so you know how often to re-wet the sponge. Highly recommend the product.

Hygrometer doesn't work,

The hygrometer is worthless. Mine has no color change at all. I guess this sponge in a rubber tube works. Instructions are a couple of sentences, and give no indication that it dries out in a couple of days. I thought it'd last at least a week in a close case, with the soundhole covered.

Dampit humidifiers have been around for years and years. I think that I can safely say that the basic design looks to be amazingly similar to what I remember when I saw these for the first time in my university days of the late 1970s. Generally, Dampits can be used over and over for years. Sometimes the rubber becomes discolored, sometimes the rubber rips near the end of the Dampit, but basically this is a very workable way to maintain at least a minimum amount of humidity in and around your instrument, something that is especially important during the winter months when artificial heat zaps the humidity out of the air. This is the first instrument-specific Dampit product that I've ever purchased and it seems to work exceptionally well. In addition to the standard Dampit, there's a sound-hole cover. In case it is not clear just how it works, the clear sound-hole cover has a short string with a loop on the end. You simply attach the Dampit to the loop and it hangs inside the guitar. My first impression is that it does an excellent job of keeping some needed humidity in the body of the instrument, something very important on a solid-top classical guitar. I would recommend this over the standard Dampit because the sound-hole cover is so convenient (hopefully it will continue to keep me from having to fish around inside the guitar for a runaway Dampit) and seems to keep the humidity focused in an area that is especially in need of it. A must have if you keep your acoustic guitar in an environment that gets much below 40-50% humidity.
