Large water projects, such as the hydroelectric dams at Aswan and Glen Canyon, Hidrovia in South America and the irrigation systems of the Sudan Gezira, cause dramatic changes in regional ecology. These changes can include wrenching disruptions to communities, fatal epidemics of water-associated malaria and bilharzia. The purpose of this book is to guide planners and engineers in improving future water projects. The past century of global experience on water projects is presented as the basis for creating new approaches. First-hand analyses, including 35 case studies from 25 countries, portray the influence of politicians, biologists, engineers, computer models and physicians on the spectacular successes and failures of the builders of canals and dams. By drawing on this experience, the author outlines methods for assessing, predicting and preventing major water-associated diseases around large dams, canals and irrigation systems. A major proposal is developed for merging the efforts of the World Bank and the World Health Organisation, in order to realise potential opportunities in improving health, while also successfully developing water resources at a necessary level
My two fotos on the top of this page show some of my family on an autumn hike - that's me on the left, my family on the right. The other foto is just me, showing my grey hairs.
My books initially on Amazon.com (before 2010), cover the areas of the impacts of tropical dams on malaria and other diseases, and water quality in rivers of the Americas.
This year -2011- I am publishing two books on Sudan. The first is "Sudan at Peace" which describes the conditions between the wars when Muslims and Christians lived in relative harmony. The second book is scheduled for the end of 2011, after Secession. It will recount the views of people from the North and the South, regarding the new Two Sudans.
As of late 2010 I have started self-publishing a series of Monographs thru Boston Harbor Publishers, in four categories. The categories are: Blue Nile Monographs on control of tropical diseases, Coastal River Monographs on water quality of New England coastal rivers, Mountain River Monographs on the water quality of rivers of the beautiful Rocky Mountains, and Monographs on Musings on Al Qaeda, including commentaries on exotic countries I have lived in or visited extensively. Somehow, these countries all seem to be breeding grounds of extremist movements, and I think my experiences will be appreciated by folks who want to understand Al Qaeda.
I started publishing the Monographs in late 2010 to get them out quickly and cheaply to you. If you are in Africa or other places overseas, I will send you Blue Nile Monograph One on Malaria, as a pdf email attachment that you can print yourself, to avoid shipping problems. I expect to publish several more monographs in 2011 and thereafter. The Monographs already available - which you can visit and review on our website for Boston Harbor Publishers - are:
Blue Nile Monograph one: A realistic strategy for fighting malaria in Africa
Blue Nile Monograph two: Health and environmental impacts of dams
Coastal Rivers Monograph one: Ten Mile River
Rocky Mountain Rivers Monograph one: Upper Dolores River
Musings Monograph one: Sudan at Peace
I will post new announcements as more Monographs get published. I intend to focus next on malaria control, on biological control of tropical diseases, and on the Two Sudans.
