Here are the words, quoted from the Amazon description, that ultimately convinced me to buy this: "14,000 BTU air conditioner cools approximately 700 sq." -- significantly more than my shop.
It was 6:00 PM when I started the unit on full cool. The temperature both inside and out was 100 degrees. Four hours later, at 10:00 PM, it was still 100 in the shop. I decided it wasn't fair to ask it to bring that temp down from scratch in the afternoon heat, so I tried again the next morning. When I started it at 9:00 AM the temperature inside was 88. 7-1/2 hours of full-on cool later, at 4:30 PM, it was 95 inside.
I understand the ramifications of cooling a mostly uninsulated room. However, at least a bubble of relative coolness should form around the unit itself, particularly snugged up in an insulated corner. During the entire operation of this unit I could only feel cool air if I stood directly in the air flow and no farther than three feet away. It did not cool any of the area around it. Turning on auxiliary fans to move the air around didn't help.
On an unrelated note, the exhaust vent is poorly designed. If the window has any kind of sill inside, the coupling will not fit the window insert. It rests on the sill and sits about two inches higher than the hole made for it (see picture). I cut and painted a wooden insert to raise the hole up to where it needed to be (again, see picture).
I had hoped for something better. Ah, well. Back it goes.
I'm no expert on these items....I've only used 2. Sadly, these arent usually setup in stores, to demo them before buying. It sure would be nice to gauge the airflow, temp of the air, and sound level before investing! That's why I'm sharing my experience with you
I came across this model by accident. My neighbor brought one home from a local store. He did 0 research. didnt read a single review, so I was very curious as to how his would compare to my 3 year old Whynter that I researched for weeks. Man did he lucked out! The airflow is COLD and plentiful! it's quieter than my current one. the window unit is a better design, the hose is wider, thicker, and attaches cleanly and easily to both the window kit and the AC unit.
I've had this for less than 1 week, however in my limited experience, having used only 2 models, this one is FAR superior. my house is small, roughly 800 SQ ft, and of that, i am only trying to cool slightly over half of that. Cooling larger areas would result in different experiences than mine, and would likely need multiple units....you'll never confuse this with Central Air...
Right now, it is 105 outside and 72 inside. my older 12,000 BTU unit would be struggling to keep it under 80 by this time of day. I highly recommend this to anyone in the market for an AC
I have used portable units in the past, so I'm familiar with their issues and vagaries, including the need to drain (potentially) and the occasional installation glitches. But I had several more installation problems (albeit minor ones) than I anticipated, and found that when using the unit to cool my bedroom (approx 350 square feet) only during the overnight hours (versus 24 hours a day with the lower BTU window unit), my TOTAL electricity bill soared almost four-fold (and I have two other window units, one of 800 BTU and the other with 1,200 BTU, in the house). Since, during the period in question, I was away for a week, and the temperatures otherwise generally weren't that high, that's one factor that causes me some concern.
Initially, installation seemed to be relatively straightforward, although you'll need to have the equipment on hand that is able to cut through part of the plastic sliding plate to make it fit your window. (Forget about making this easy to move from one window to another, if they are of different sizes, let alone one house to another.) I didn't, at first, and had to rig up a temporary fix involving insulation around the gap between the main plastic piece (containing the hose vent) and the window frame.
The biggest installation problem -- and a problem on an ongoing basis -- is with keeping the hose connected both to the vent and to the AC unit itself. Apparently, you are supposed to simply fit it over the outlets on both and it's supposed to stay attached. Except that it doesn't. The slightest motion -- if you jar it with your hip; if my cat bangs into it -- and the hose becomes disconnected. Which means either that you'll have to duct tape everything together (so much for mobility...Read more ›
