4.0 out of 5 stars Back Into The Fray: The Second 13 Episodes Of Season One For This Australian Teen Drama, May 14, 2013
This review is from: Dance Academy: Season 1, Volume 2 (DVD)
The popular Australian teen import "Dance Academy" has been discovered and embraced by North American audiences after its run on TeenNICK and its availability on Netflix. Its first two seasons are getting an official DVD release, however, for those that want to add it to their permanent DVD collection. I always have to question the marketing thought process behind the decision to split television seasons into different products. I understand, perhaps, if the season airs over two distinct time periods and you want to rush the first batch of episodes to market. But in this case, these are all ready to go. And instead of Season One and Season Two sets with all 26 episodes present, we're getting each Season in Two Volumes of 13 episodes. Truthfully, it doesn't make it any less expensive to the consumer. Are there a bunch of viewers that are going to say "I loved the first half of Season Two, but who wants the second half?" Doubtful and especially so when they are released on the same day! It just makes it more confusing.

"Dance Academy" features the struggles and successes of a young heroine, Tara Webster. Initially, the show plays much as a fish out of water tale as Tara leaves her rural existence for the dream of attending the National Academy of Dance in Sydney. She certainly isn't prepared for what she'll find, with great highs and surprising lows. As she continues in her travels, though, the program expertly integrates the rest of the cast into a thoughtful teen ensemble. You show is humorous without being snarky, and covers important issues without being overtly preachy. It's a winning combination and easy to like. Through all of the personal drama, the show never fails to impress with the dance element. There's is no denying that the cast can dance, and it's a joy to watch.

Season One, Volume Two:
Episodes included are (14) Turning Point, (15) My Life en Pointe, (16) Freefalling, (17) A Midsummer Night's Dream, (18) Betty Bunheads, (19) Fairest & Best, (20) Ballet Fever, (21) FOMO: Fear Of Missing Out, (22) Flight Or Fight Response, (23) BFF: Best Friends Forever, (24) Heatwave, (25) The Deep End, and (26) Learning To Fly, Part 2.

Tara returns from break with a newfound confidence, but with greater recognition comes greater responsibility. With everyone working toward the spectacular year end performance, will she be able to find the strength to stand out?

OTHER VOLUMES:
Season One, Volume One:
Episodes included are (1) Learning To Fly, (2) Week Zero, (3) Behind Barres, (4) Minefield, (5) Real Men Don't Dance, (6) Perfection, (7) Crush Test Dummies, (8) Growing Pains, (9) Heartbeat, (10) Through The Looking Glass, (11) One Perfect Day, (12) Pressure, and (13) Family.

Basically, these episodes serve as a nice introduction to the school, the characters, and the entirely new world. Tara starts out very low on the totem pole, so she must struggle mightily to get into the groove.

Season Two, Volume One:
Episodes included are (1) In The Middle, Somewhat Elevated, (2) Dreamlife, (3) Faux Pas De Deux, (4) Legends, (5) Showcase, (6) Like No One's Watching, (7) A Choreographed Life, (8) Connectivity, (9) The Break, (10) A Good Life, (11) Self Sabotage, (12) Breaking Pointe, and (13) Backstab.

After a successful first year, Tara is excited to get back to her friends. But now things have gotten decidedly more competitive, this is the world of dance. Harder work spells greater triumphs AND bigger disappointments.

Season Two, Volume Two:
Episodes included are (14) Rescue Mission, (15) Moving On, (16) Origins, (17) Love And War, (18) Catch Me If I Fall, (19) The Nationals, (20) Check? X, (21) Ladder Theory, (22) Win Or Lose, (23) Love It Or Fight It, (24) The Prix De Fonteyn, (25) The Second, and (26) The Red Shoes.

Life is hard near the top and the strains are showing. The Season culminates in a pressure filled competition to determine the best dancer in the world. KGHarris, 5/13.

5.0 out of 5 stars great mix of dancing, drama and comedy, August 22, 2014

This review is from: Dance Academy: Season 1, Volume 2 (DVD)
Absolutely wonderful series. Lead dancer, Tara, is exquisite, and other dancers are outstanding. Hard to believe there is this much talent in Australia and grateful I was flipping through channels on TV and saw this show accidentally one Saturday so bought the collection. Only thing NOT believable is the lack of adults in the dorms at nighttime and the fact that most of the kids actually get along with each other.
