Book Description

May 11, 2004

While anger deserves our attention and respect, women still learn to silence our anger, to deny it entirely, or to vent it in a way that leaves us feeling helpless and powerless. In this vivid, engaging and eminently wise work, Dr. Lerner teaches women to identify the true sources of anger and to use anger as a powerful vehicle for creating meaningful and lasting change. The challenge of anger is at the heart of our struggle with intimacy, self-esteem, and joy. The Dance of Anger has inspired more "You changed my life" stories from both women and men than perhaps any other bestseller on the American scene today.

About the Author

Harriet Lerner, Ph.D., is one of our nation’s most loved and respected relationship experts. Renowned for her work on the psychology of women and family relationships, she served as a staff psychologist at the Menninger Clinic for more than two decades. A distinguished lecturer, workshop leader, and psychotherapist, she is the author of The Dance of Anger and other bestselling books. She is also, with her sister, an award-winning children's book writer. She and her husband are therapists in Lawrence, Kansas, and have two sons.

From AudioFile

In a snappy abridgment of her 1985 book, the author examines the reasons anger in women is still so misunderstood, feared, and punished. She sees women's anger as a normal reaction to common interpersonal threats and conflicts that too often get resolved by being overpowered by the man's anger. By delineating the threats and supports that expressing anger activates, she offers a refreshing look at the cultural and institutional forces that condemn a woman's anger as unjust and crazy. With great wisdom and sensitivity, she sets up a logical frame for getting through the common arguments in relationships. As genuine as it is authoritative, this is one of the very best learning audios on a mental health topic. T.W. © AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

5.0 out of 5 stars The Dance of Anger CD: A Woman's Guide to Changing the Pattern of Intimate Relationships, January 4, 2007
This review is from: The Dance of Anger CD (Audio CD)
I bought both the CD and book for this title, recommended by my counselor. The CD has been listened to on my trips to and from work, and the book has been a continuing reference. I saw/see myself in so many of the situations detailed by the author; I could have been the woman with a very similar story. As I realized that patterns had been deeply set, I knew that I had to be the one to start the changes. Was it difficult? Of couse, but I needed to stop the cycle that was destroying my relationship. It has been more than three months since I first started using this guide. With the help of a wonderful therapist, I can say that the relationship with my husband is stronger than I ever felt it would be. There is still more work to be done, and I will continue. I do not want anger to ever control me/us again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for everyone!!!, July 25, 2006

This review is from: The Dance of Anger CD (Audio CD)
This audio book was a great source of information, not only for helping me figure out my past anger issues, but how to deal with future issues. The examples in the book were real life and I could place myself in those situations. I have listened to it more than once, and I still keeping finding ways to avoid anger and work on the real issues with my kids, parents, co-workers and spouse. Again, a must for everyone...it may sound strange, but would make a great wedding present!
