Not your "usual" dance films. "Case Studies" is the highlight!, January 1, 2008
This review is from: Dance for Camera 2 (DVD)
In this, the second in this series of compilations of short independent films focused around modern dance, Producer Kelly Hargraves (whose short four-minute film "Cargo" is included on this volume) has gathered seven more films who tell their story though dance movements, rather than words. All have either electronic or atonal scores and some were shot on video.
With the exception of "The Duchess", a 15-minute adaptation of a theatre work, which uses a full cast, and is truly bizarre (at least to my tastes), each film features a solo or pair of dancers, and runs eight minutes or less.
I have previously seen the hilarious "Case Studies From The Groat Center For Sleep Disorders" as it was shown as part of the evening of dance by one of my favorite - and most accessible - dance companies - Body Vox - a few seasons ago. This hilarious piece of satire is worth the price of admission here. The other pieces may require repeated viewing to really appreciate them but each uses the human body, and it's many possible positions, to make a statement.
Films which are composed fully of modern dance are often few and far between and this 50-minute collection will appeal to anyone interested modern dance.
