Review

This page-turner might well be required reading in High School Literature or Social Studies classes. Millions of teens have no knowledge of the warning signs of a potentially dangerous relationship.

Keisha's story reveals how she became nearly brainwashed by the many forms of verbal abuse she suffered from her teen boy friend, father of her child.

Keisha eventually rescued herself and has gone on to help others. --Patricia Evans

From the Author

Verbal and Emotional Abuse is like Mind Control
Dance with Danger a Story of Domestic Abuse and Survival, is my personal experience in an abusive relationship with my high school boyfriend. The relationship went from sweet to sour in a matter of days, and lots of red flags were there. Being that I was young and naive as to what these were, I tried to save him and make our relationship work, which led to the years of on and off again status of this abusive and unhealthy relationship.

I chose to write this book, not only for healing purposes but to help other women who are in a similar situation. When you are dating someone and they begin to use their emotions to control you and instill fear in you, how do you respond? Is this abuse? Are you just overreacting? Does having a baby with someone you know you are not happy with make your relationship better? When your partner is being hurtful toward you verbally, emotionally and sometimes physically, what do you do? Is this abuse or am I just being mistreated?
Verbal and emotional abuse can be subtle at times and difficult to report to authorities due to there not being visible scars or evidence of physical violence. (Although certain verbally abusive relationships also contain physical violence, those that don't may escalate to physical abuse after some time).
In my memoir, I share my very own journey of being in a verbally and emotionally abusive relationship. My goal is to inspire others to get the help that they need, end the cycle of teen dating violence and family violence. Not only for couples, but for their children as well.

This book is an awe-inspiring look into a young lady's life and how she tears herself free of an abuser. It is hard for me to believe anyone would harm another being as Keisha was harmed - over and over and over again. I am happy for how she finally left this loser (her "high-school sweet-heart" of all people)! It was my "YES!" moment in the book! I was so excited to finish it! I am so proud of Keisha, and other young women (and men, however there are fewer) to survive this horrid dance of going back to their abuser. It was hard to read in some parts because I just didn't want her to go back to that failure of a "man" and he would just sweet talk her to it over and over. I am very happy she was able to escape his torments (sad it took time, but we would not have this book to empower others)!

She ends each chapter with a short poem. Part of why I like this book so much. I loved how each few lines summed up perfectly the previous chapter's occurrences! Quite an author! I look forward to reading other poems and hopefully more books of her's. Although the subject was hard to stomach, it was an easy read and the chapters just flew by.

I would recommend this to anyone going through an abusive (emotional or otherwise) relationship or to a friend of someone experiencing abuse. It would help support those in need. Someone experienced abuse, was able to escape it and grow and save her babies who will grow into beautiful loving adults!

I really enjoyed reading this authors story. Its not just a story about domestic violence, she describes the way the relationship gradually progressed, and how she has made it to where she is today. While reading, I was able to understand and "feel" the strength she has. I love the way she doesnt claim the victim role. She also does a great job of educating the reader, on the real life dynamics that occur in abuse relationships. I would recommend this, book to any friend or family member who is currently going through an abusive relationship, and even anyone who needs stregnth to stay away from their abuser. This book was a quick read with a wealth of information, and inspiration

I admire Keisha Allen-Smith for the courage to tell her story. Despite her turbulent childhood and domestically violent marriage, she continued to have faith in God and be a good mother to her children. She persevered when others would have given up. She is an inspiration to us all and provides her readers with the hope that despite a troubled past, it is possible to overcome, be a victorious survivor, and create your own destiny.

It feels as thought Keisha is sitting across the kitchen table, telling you the story of her life. She, a very intelligent woman, explains how and why she made the choices that she did. As a school principal in a high risk neighborhood, I wonder how many families are living similar lives. What can we learn from reading this book? How can we help our students to not go down the same path? This is a book well worth reading.
