Beautiful O'Hara plays a budding ballerina who is forced to find work in burlesque houses where she becomes a stooge for a tough stripper who is played by Lucille Ball; they both compete for the affections of playboy Louis Hayward. This unusual little backstage musical, which was directed by Dorothy Arzner, gave Lucille Ball a chance to showcase her rarely seen dramatic abilities. Granted, Lucy was never known for her dramatic range - per se - but her hard-boiled interpretation of Bubbles does justice to the character she portrays: Ball plays it crassy and brassy all the way. Today, this film has a feminist cult following partly because it was directed by Hollywood's once lone female director - Dorothy Arzner, and partly due to the speech given by O'Hara regarding the humiliation and degradation of women having to be seen as mere objects for the benefit of male entertainment. Truthfully, this is a rather odd-ball film which contains some banal lines and lethargic performances from the secondary players: it's mainly of interest to fans of Ball who will get to see their beloved 29 year-old Lucy steal nearly every scene she's in as the brassy and sassy Bubbles. As a footnote, it was during the making of this film that Desi Arnaz first met Lucy: she had just finished a cat-fight scene with O' Hara when Arnaz first laid eyes on her, and she was made up to looked like a dirty, dishelveled mess. Arnaz later wrote in his memoirs that he couldn't believe that the beautiful blonde (the red hair came later!) girl he was introduced to - later that same day - could possibly be the same trampy looking gal. Desi confided to a pal "What a hunk of woman!!" when first seeing Lucy properly groomed. Simualtaneously, Ball worked with Arnaz shooting TOO MANY GIRLS - which was made on an neighbouring RKO soundstage - and they were to be married on November 30, 1940. Ironically, in 1957, Ball and Arnaz bought RKO studios for their hugely successful enterprise, DESILU productions.

When I met the red lady she was a woman...who am I? why am I here? did you ever ask yourself such questions in the middle of the night, when you are a washed up actor in pain from the fact you were making money on a bad show, and now you wear cloth on your bottom, and are screaming in pain from the fact that even a hack like John Waters don't want you anymore.....on the subject of black holes, it is true that when the vector of seven is added to the quantum equation of the mass of seven math formulas you get the effect of the jam theory of.....I am a actor, not an animal...by the way did you see jim Carey in the movie when the sea monster...what? time for my din din?
