Biography

Rosie Flores is one of those musical treasures that lurk beneath the popular "culture" radar and we ignore at our own peril lest they get discouraged and disappear, only to be "discovered" by Sweden or somewhere. (No offense, we love you Sweden!) Then we are left to scratch our heads and say "Hey, why didn't WE love her first?" Here's your ... Read more in Amazon's Rosie Flores Store

Product Description

Amazon.com

Like Lucinda Williams's breakthrough 1998 release Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, this Rosie Flores full-length CD finds the talented singer-guitarist settling into a comfortable groove that owes as much to folk and country as it does to pop and rock. Flores's vulnerable voice has at times the fragile quality of Suzanne Vega, but that is where the comparison ends. This self-proclaimed "Rockabilly Filly" is anything but a doe-eyed folkie strumming a guitar from atop a barstool. Flores shifts comfortably between ballads and high-energy honky-tonk rave-ups, eschewing slick, modern-country production for a classic warm sound that makes her sweet voice glow. Her lyrics, though, are unquestionably what makes these tracks potential juke-joint favorites--from the sentimental slow-dance lilt of "Who's Gonna Fix It Now" to the shack-shaking shout-out of "It Came from Memphis." The lone cover is an irresistible version of Wanda Jackson's "Funnel of Love." Dance Hall Dreams keeps alive country's honky-tonk spirit and still manages to incorporate fresh elements, a welcome change from the featureless pablum that passes for country these days. --Adem Tepedelen

An extremely talented performer, I saw Rosie open for Marshall Crenshaw back in `92 with just a guitar, and she made a helluva impression...her best CDs are "After the Farm" and this new one, which offer "smart" country (not entirely unlike Bonnie Raitt) that mix the best of America's music with the intelligent writing of more city-bound singer-songwriters. She deserves a hit!

Perhaps her best. She's talented and understated. "Who's Gonna Fix it Now" will bring you to tears. She has a marvelous voice, and the guitar work is exquisite.

Well, a few weeks ago I had no idea what Rosie sounded like. I saw her at the Minnesota State Fair at a free band shell. I usually look over the acts on the web site and if someone sounds interesting I check them out. A couple years ago I discovered Bill Kirchen and he was at the same band shell as Rosie only the couple days before her couple of days. Bill had an excellent band this year and one person he featured often was Cindy Cashdollar, who is all over this album by Rosie. Cindy played a lot of rockin' bluesy solos during Bill's set.

It was nice to see Rosie live so I could appreciate what a fine guitarist she is; same with Cindy. Rosie was in more of a rockabilly mode than on this album which is more country, but not entirely. There are some good rockers here. She was pushing her new album, Working Girl's Guitar, which featured a song by Bobby Vee and the bass playing of one of Bobby's sons. For the concert she was backed by Bobby's son and Grandson, 11, on drums. Both were excellent and Rosie was very gracious to all the Vees. My daughter and I were sitting right behind them. All a nice coincidence. Ok, enough context and life story.

I think the songs here are very strong and having two excellent musicians like Rosie and Cindy makes it fun. I like that Rosie's playing can get a little unpredictable (a huge plus) and even out of control a little at time. That is someone not just going through the motions.

I've got a couple more Rosie albums coming. She has a lot of them; she's been around a long time beneath my radar. I chose this one because there was some live stuff and to get more Cindy Cashdollar.

So: great songs, great musicianship, excellent side(wo)man. Five stars easy.

Just great. No other words necessary. If you like true country music this one is for you. Our band loves this one.
