3.0 out of 5 stars Not A Bad Effort
Mary J. Blige enters the world of non-stop dance with this remix project. The many veteran producers make this a decent effort to put Mary's voice behind a high energy beat or two. While some remixes disappoint, others hold the fort and at least make for a good night at the club.

Of the disappointing numbers, the Thunderpuss Remix of "Rainy Dayz" takes the...

Destiny's Child tried it, and they failed.

J. Lo came close, but she fell short.

And don't even get me started on P. Diddy's "We Invented the Remix."

Mary J. Blige has finally demonstrated how a remix album should be done on the outstanding "Dance for Me" compilation! It would have been easy for Blige to take the safe route and release a remix album of lazy hip hop beats and uninspired samples. Thankfully, she knows that we deserve much better. Instead, we're treated to extended remixes of tracks from "No More Drama" and her 1999 release "Mary," and they feature house, energetic disco, and two-step. The album's two high points are the remixes of "No More Drama" and "Rainy Dayz" by the California-based DJ team of Thunderpuss (Chris Cox and Barry Harris). These guys give both jams an aggressive, energetic thrust of tribal beats and housed-up rhythms. Also impressive is the house reinterpretation of 2001's hit single "Family Affair" by Spanish Fly. I've heard the original version of this song at so many hip hop clubs that I never imagined a house remix could be possible, but sure enough, it is. In addition, Hex Hector delivers a discocentric rendition of "He Think I Don't Know," and Junior Vasquez shines in his energetic remix of "Your Child." The final track of the album is Blige's cover of "Let No Man Put Asunder." Yeah, it already appears on her 1999 album "Mary," but it's an appropriate close to an album of this nature. "Dance for Me" destroys the myth that all remix albums are tacky attempts to rip off fans. This album delivers a serious bang for your buck, and in my school of music, it gets an A-.

4.0 out of 5 stars With this?... Mary can have everyone dance for her..Tight!, August 21, 2002

This new one from mary is a definite change from all the hip/hop jams and soulful ballads she has been having in the past. It is a mix of old and new remixes....Club remixes that make this so much more different from her past releases. Anyone that is a fan of club/House music and mary should not miss out on this and pick it up. Even if your not a mary fan this is sure to get you dancing or bobbin your head in some kind of way. This might not be as popular with all her fans but I have no problems with it and think she should have released it sooner. I know she will gain a more bigger audience with this relase but not that big since hip/hop R+B is the base of her audience. Mariah Carey is a good exmaple of an artist that is known for having tight house remixes of her songs. Now Mary J will have to join that rank with this release if she keeps it up. If you never heard any hosue remixes from mary yet...now is a good time to try...Get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mary Remixed, August 16, 2002
This review is from: Dance for Me (Audio CD)
This CD is a limited edition remix album, featuring some hot remixes of Mary J Blige songs. The tracklisting is as follows: No More Drama (Thunderpuss Remix) (9:18), Family Affair (Spanish Fly Remix) (7:51), Everything (Curtis Moore Remix) (7:06), Rainy Dayz (Thunderpuss Remix) (7:56), He Think I Don't Know (HQ2 Club Mix) (8:25), Your Child (Junior Vasquez Remix) (7:32), Never Been (Al B. Rich 2 Step Groove Remix) (5:35), Dance For Me (G Club Remix) (7:11), Give Me You (Extended Nino Radio Mix) (6:42), and Let No Man Put Asunder (4:20). The Thunderpuss remixes are really intense, but my favorite remix on here is the HQ2 Club Mix of He Think I Don't Know, that is one that keeps you going for over 8 minutes. I also really like the Junior Vasquez remix of Your Child, and the Al B Rich Step Groove Remix of Never Been. Overall its a decent remix album, and fans will definately want this one, or get it if you want to get your groove on.

Mary J. Blige has SUCCEDED where others have failed in releasing the ultimate Dance Mix CD. This is a MUST HAVE for the house party enthusiast. Mary delivers a heart pounding; explosive remixes with a powerful driving force of high energy. Her remix of "No More Drama" is riveting and exhilarating and rival's her live performance on last year's music awards show. If you don't get out of your chair and dance, you must be dead.

Finally, the community, the music industry and the world would like to thank Mary J. Blige for not naming this CD - Mary J. the Remix!

4.0 out of 5 stars Love It!, September 11, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Dance for Me (Audio CD)
I love this CD. She's just as good as Deborah Cox on her dance mixes. The beats are not crazy and insane like most of Madonna's mixes. My faves are the mixes for "Family Affair" and "Give Me You"

But it's still missing ALOT of her mixes. If you check out Kazaa or the various Sharing Hubs using DC++, you will get the unreleased DJ songs there.

****These songs are full length DJ mixes (8-9 minutes), not album edits like the ones found on Mariah Carey's Greatest Hits (3-4 minutes) dance CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars You must be dead if you're not dancing, September 2, 2002

Get crunk, 'cause Mary's back with a hot dance remix album. This CD is perfect if you're a Mary J. Blige collector or if you're looking for a great party CD. The highlights of this album are the tight mixes of No More Drama, Rainy Dayz, He Think I Don't Know and Never Been. I think the best track on the whole album is Family Affair, which will have you thinking you're back in a 70's discotheque. The only complaints I have about this album are the tracks Your Child and Let No Man Put Asunder. The latter only because it's not a remix, just the LP version off the Mary CD. The former because the vocals don't always flow with the beat, making it sound very awkward at times. Other than that, this is probably the best remix album I've ever heard. Cop this CD, and as Mary says: Leave your situations at the door, Grab someone and get your [booty] on the dance floor.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mary J. is the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul -- and Dance, August 21, 2002

I didn't know Mary J. Blige and her record company was releasing this CD, and I think it's a great idea, and I'm happier to say, it's an excellent record. Remix albums can induce groans as sometimes they can be overdone and unsatisfying. But Mary J.'s music is ripe for remixing and she picked the best remixers. Of course, Hex Hector, Thunderpuss and Junior Vasquez are, not suprisingly, included but their pounding remixes are hot and I love Nino's remix of "Give Me You", with its' lush orchestral sounds mixed with a disco beat, softer than the previous remixes. Spanish Fly's remix of "Family Affair" is suprisingly good considering it never sounded like it would turn into a suitable house remix, but it has.

My only complaints are why not include the Franckie Knuckles classic remix of "Everything" instead of the Curtis and Moore version? How about including Hex Hector's remix of "Deep Inside"? And why not include Maurice Joshua's smokin' remix of "Let No Man Put Asunder" instead of the album version that already appeared on Blige's 1999 album, "Mary"?

But these are only minor complaints since "Dance For Me" is one of the best remix albums I've heard. It certainly stands up there with Kim English's "Re-Energized", Madonna's "You Can Dance" and the Kylie Minogue series, "The Greatest Remix Hits, Vol. 1-4".

5.0 out of 5 stars POWERHOUSE PRODUCTION GIVES BLIGE ANOTHER WINNER!, August 18, 2002
This review is from: Dance for Me (Audio CD)
I'm in total agreement with earlier reviewer Rich that this compilation of remixes of "La Blige's" biggest recent hits is one great disc. Featuring a massive array of restructurings by the best in the biz, Mary's fans will find a little bit of everything from hip-hop jams to songs that one might "hustle" to. The only "fly in the soup" is the addition of "Let No Man Put Asunder," a mediocre tune presented in its original form from 1999's Mary. Thankfully, it's the last cut and can be easily overlooked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best R&B remix album to date, December 18, 2006
This review is from: Dance for Me (Audio CD)
So many have tried to do this and have all failed: Destiny's Child, Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Mariah, Debroah Cox and Toni Braxton. This is by far the best dance mix CD of all the R&B or pop divas out there. The Family Affair mix I'm a little dissapointed in because there is a much better mix out there for that song, but all in all this is a great CD. A must have. Great for working out with, walking/running, cleaning around the house, a sunny day drive. You can sing along and they are catchy, upbeat and positive messages with all these songs. Enjoy!
