Hijinks in the country!, April 22, 2011
Viola is a bumbling, sheltered 21 year old living in the city for the first time on her own. She's living in an old house she absolutely loves! She gets on really well with all the other lodgers and Daniel, the moody grumpy owner of the building. She works for the Society for the Conservation of Ancient Buildings (SCAB). She loves her job, and the old houses. SCAB consists of three people, including her.
Philip, her boss, is also her first lover. He's rude and violent with her. He doesn't really appreciate her. Then there is Giles, he's dark and brooding and looks down on Viola. He really doesn't like her very much.
Giles and Viola are sent to Inskip Park to assess the state of things. The house is falling down around everyone's ears, but you can help but like the family, as eccentric as they are. Viola loves the house and the family. She's smitten by Jeremy, the heir, and loves Henry, the youngest. Giles is smitten with Arabella "Lalla", who went to school with Viola when they were young. She's also engaged to an affable bloke named Hamish, something she forgets to mention. Sir James is a grumpy drunk grouch, or so it seems and Lady Inskip is a fragile thing who seems to be in her own world and afraid of everything.
But not all is as it seems. This book has such an intricate plot that leaves you eager to find out what's going to happen next. The cast of characters is long and everyone plays a very important part of the multi-layered story. Yes, some of it is predictable, but not very much. It was so exciting that I found it hard to put down. The odd thing is one can relate to most of the characters in the book, or at least commiserate with them. I would definitely recommend this book!
