An irritating primer to dance music sequencing!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dance Music Programming Secrets (Paperback)
I have read several well-written books on the subject of MIDI sequencing... however, this is NOT one of them. By attempting to go about constructing a groove step by step the author seems to waste a lot of time setting things up and then changing them. By only using Cubase in his examples he makes following along difficult for other sequnecer users . I recommend "The MIDI Files" by Rob Young.

What secrets?,
By A Customer

Don't buy this book hoping to learn any "tricks of the trade" as the title might suggest. The book is an introduction to the very *basics* of sequencing. The included midi files are dull and uninspired.

SOMETHING SMELLED FISHY?, I WANT MY MONEY BACK! :-(,

Well this book was an attempt, I'll give it that! However unless you are a labotomized "E" junkie, you would learn more after just 5 minutes in front of any cakewalk/protools program. This book comes second only to the bullsh*t trip to MARS that NASA took with their spaceships and probes. If you bought that then buy this, if your smart you'll smell the stink a mile away and look for other more intellectual material. My favorite web sight is forever tainted by this what shame!!!!!

Disappointing,

From what I have read from the reviews about the book from the other people here is quite disappointing. I am a professional disc jockey and have been in the business for the last 11 years and have played to crowd with many different styles in using music programming. I am looking for anyone who can share and exchange views with me about club music programming. Using music tempo or using music energy or even whatever anyone can come up with to playing to crowd. Calling all Djs: answer me!!

Don't bother unless you are a TOTAL beginner,

Don't buy this book. All it is in reality is a half-baked user guide for Cubase. Don't think it is goign to tell you anything about 'programming', or anything useful. The sort of info we get here is "Place kick drums on eack crotchet beat of the bar to create a house rhythm".... WOW !!! I'd never have worked that out on my own.Seriously, this is s--t, avoid.

Top notch guide to Cubase,

As a beginner in the electronic music field. I was able to plough through this book with ease. Now I don't usually crow about the style of a book, but this was a wonderful read and helpful too. Don't hedge your bets and root out this book. Mr. Brown certainly knows his arse from his elbow.

an excellent resource,

great job of describing midi and sequencing. you don't need cubase, as everything can be done on other sequencers as well, but it's a bonus. steinberg (cubase's creator) listens to dance musicians in making changes to the program, so it's fitting that was the sequencer used with the book. i recommend for the beginner and for the musician trying to 'tighten up' his/her sound or perhaps some pointers in how to sequence for a particular genre.

I'd like to commend the publishing of "Dance Music Programming Secrets" by Roger Brown. I would give my strongest endorsement for purchasing to ANY fellow computer musician regardless of skill level. Although I do not own Cubase, Roger Brown's enthusiasm and thoroughness in his use of the program is a very strong incentive toward buying it."

excellent MIDI book, in depth on the IPS, nice CD-ROM,

A great resource for MIDI in Cubase. Very effective, "do it" approach to instruction. LOTS of information on the Logical Editor and Interacitve Phrase Synthesizer, two powerful but funky parts of Cubase. The MIDI instructions are Cubase specific, but the discussions of dance music in general are also good, and worthwhile reading for anyone making that kind of music
